I take it that the van is a rear wheel drive. So remove the wheel. Remove the brake caliper and lift off the disc. Undo the axle nut and remove hub from axle. Knock out both the bearing cups and clean hub center. Fit new cups into the hub ensuring they are tight against the seat. Thaking a small amount of grease in the palm of you hand take the cone and with the most open area tend to scrape the grease from you palm so that the grease is forced between the rollers until it come out the smallest end.This grease is all thaty you will need for a properly lubricated bearing. Spread grease evenly around the outside of the rollers. Fit inner cone into hub and tap in new grease seal (lip facing bearing) Having repeated lubricating process on outer cone fit hub back on axle and fit outer cone. Fitflat washer and nut . Do nut up while turning hub so as to seat bearings. Tighten nut until a slight drag is felt when turning the hub. Now comes the difficult part. Without touching the hub undo the nut until it is slightly loose then do it back up until it just touches the bearing. THis is a no preload -no freeplay position for the bearing. Having achieved this, pin the nut . IF it is necessary to turn the nut to allow this to happen tighten the nut slightly. Refit dust cap ,calpier, wheel etc REmember to replace both bearings cups and cones and use high temp grease Safety first --place the vehiocle in stands--- not bricks

Replace Front Wheel Hub Bearing 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2 wheel drive


Removal
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the brake caliper, caliper anchor, rotor and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  4. Remove the cotter pin, nut retainer and axle hub nut.
  5. Remove the hub/bearing mounting bolts from the back of the steering knuckle. Remove hub/bearing from the steering knuckle and off the axle shaft.
Installation
  1. Install the hub/bearing to the knuckle.
  2. Install the hub/bearing-to-knuckle bolts and tighten to specification.
  3. Install the hub washer and nut. Tighten the hub nut to specification. Install the nut retainer and a new cotter pin.
  4. Install the brake rotor, caliper anchor, caliper and ABS wheel speed sensor.
  5. Install the wheel and tire assembly.
  6. Remove the support and lower the vehicle.

FRONT DRIVE AXLE Hubs and Bearings REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Models 44, 60, 70 and 80 with Manual or Automatic Locking Hubs
  1. Raise the vehicle and install jackstands.
  2. Refer to Manual or Automatic Free Running Hub Removal and Installation and remove the hub assemblies. Fig. 1: Remove the outer locknut on the Model 60/70 front drive axle 88477g63.gif

  3. Remove the wheel bearing lock nut, using a hub nut wrench.
  4. Remove the lock ring from the bearing adjusting nut. This can be done with your finger tips or a screwdriver. Fig. 2: Exploded view of the front hub retaining hardware 88471109.gif

  5. Using a hub nut wrench remove the bearing adjusting nut.
  6. Remove the caliper and suspend it out of the way (see the brake section).
  7. Slide the hub and disc assembly off the spindle. The outer wheel bearing will slide out as the hub is removed, so be prepared to catch it. To install:
  8. Carefully position the hub and disc assembly on the spindle.
  9. Install the outer bearing cone and roller, and the adjusting nut. NOTE: The adjusting nut has a small dowel on one side. This dowel faces outward to engage the locking ring.
  10. Using a hub nut wrench tighten the bearing adjustment nut to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm), while rotating the wheel back and forth to seat the bearings.
  11. Back off the adjusting nut approximately 90°.
  12. Install the lock ring by turning the nut to the nearest hole and inserting the dowel pin. NOTE: The dowel pin must seat in a lock ring hole for proper bearing adjustment and wheel retention.
  13. Install the outer lock nut and tighten to 50-80 ft. lbs. (68-108 Nm). Final end-play of the wheel on the spindle should be 0.001-0.010 in. (0.025-0.25mm).
  14. Assemble the hub parts.
  15. Install the caliper.
  16. Remove the jackstands and lower the vehicle.
Model 44 With Full-Time 4-Wheel Drive
  1. Remove the wheel cover.
  2. Remove the cotter pin and loosen the axle shaft nut. Fig. 3: Remove the wheel bearing adjusting nut from the Model 44 front axle 88477g64.gif

  3. Raise the support the front end on jackstands.

  5. Unbolt the caliper and support it out of the way. DO NOT DISCONNECT THE BRAKE LINE!
  6. Remove the inboard brake pad.
  7. Remove the axle shaft nut and washer.
  8. Through the hole provided in the rotor, remove the six retainer bolts.
  9. Position pull C-4358, or equivalent, over the wheel lugs and install the lug nuts. Tighten the main screw of the puller to remove the hub, bearings, retainer and outer seal as an assembly.
  10. Insert a prybar through the U-joint and wedge the shaft inward as far as it will go. Make sure that it is wedged securely and can't be moved.
  11. Install the hub, rotor and bearing assembly and tighten the retainer bolts to 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) in a crisscross pattern.
  12. Install the brake adapter. Tighten the bolts to 85 ft. lbs. (115 Nm).
  13. Remove the prybar form the U-joint.
  14. Install the axle shaft nut and tighten it to 100 ft. lbs. (136 Nm), then continue tightening it to align the cotter pin holes. Install the cotter pin.
  15. Using the lube fitting, fill the knuckle with NLGI, Grade 2, multi-purpose EP grease until the grease is seen flowing through the inner seal. Fig. 5: Lubrication fitting location on the rotor top hat 88477g69.gif

  16. Install the inner brake pad and caliper (see Section 9).
  17. Install the wheels and tighten the lug nuts to 110 ft. lbs. (150 Nm).

replace the bearing or wheel hub assembly.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 2wd Models NOTE: Refer to wheel bearing service and bearing preload adjustment procedures found in Section 1.
  1. Raise the front of the truck and support it with safety stands. Remove the wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper and suspend it with wire, out of the way. Remove the caliper torque plate if equipped.
  3. Remove the dust cap and then remove the cotter pin, lock washer (if equipped) nut lock and nut.
  4. Pull the hub/disc assembly off the spindle with the outer bearing. Don't let the bearing fall out.
  5. Pry the inner oil seal out and remove the inner bearing. To install:
  6. Clean and inspect the bearings and outer races.
  7. Using a brass drift and a hammer, drive out the bearing outer race. Press a new one into position.
  8. Pack the bearings with grease until it oozes out the other side. Coat the inside of the hub and cap with grease.
  9. Position the inner bearing into the hub, coat the oil seal with grease and press it into the hub.
  10. Press the hub assembly onto the spindle and install the outer bearing and thrust washer.
  11. Install the hub nut. Turn the hub a few times to seat the bearings and then loosen the nut until there is 0mm axial play. Using a spring tension gauge, check that the preload (with new grease seal installed) is 2.2–6.4 lbs. (9.8–28.4N)
  12. Install the lock-nut, new cotter pin and hub grease cap.
  13. Install the brake torque plate. Install the brake caliper.
  14. Install the wheels and lower the truck.
4wd Models The hub and bearing service procedures for a 4wd models are basically the same as those for a 2wd version, with the exception of removing the free running hub assembly and the bearing preload adjustment. Refer to Sections 1 and 7 for additional information. Adjust the preload after the wheel bearing is replaced or the front axle assembly is reassembled. BEARING PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT
  1. Thoroughly clean all parts and pack the wheel bearings.
  2. Apply grease to threaded portions of the spindle, grease seal lip and wheel hub.
  3. Tighten the wheel bearing lock-nut with a socket and torque wrench to 58–72 ft. lbs. (78–98 Nm).
  4. Rotate the hub in both directions a few times to seat the bearings. Loosen wheel bearing lock-nut.
  5. Retighten the lock-nut to 0.4–1.1 ft. lbs. (0.5–1.5 Nm).
  6. Turn wheel hub several times in both directions.

  8. Measure wheel bearing axial end-play. The wheel bearing end-play specification is 0.
  9. Install lock washer by tightening the lock-nut within 15–30 degrees.
  10. Turn wheel hub several times in both directions. Wheel bearing should be seated correctly.
  11. If necessary, measure wheel bearing preload. NOTE: Measure wheel bearing preload with a spring-type gauge; measure at wheel hub bolt, with tire removed. The hub assembly should rotate with 1.6–4.7 lbs. (0.73–2.13 kg) of pressure.

How i can fix the wheel bearing of my mercury cougar 93.is front one


Buy Chilton or Haynes manual.
Break loose lug nuts. (One turn)
Lift car with jack.
Remove wheel.
Remove brake caliper and hang with something other than the brake line.
Remove brake rotor.
Remove large hub nut. Borrow socket from auto parts store.
Hub should slide off. A 2 jaw puller may be needed if it doesn't slide right off.
You are supposed to discard the hub nut and buy a new one. I always reuse mine...

After installing new hub, torque hub nut at 188-254 ft-lbs. (Which is a lot.)
Reinstall everything in reverse order.
Now is a good time to clean and lube the caliper slide pins and check the condition of the brake pads.
Torque lug nuts 85-105 ft-lbs.

1. Remove the wheel knuckle.

CAUTION: Do not loosen the axle wheel hub retainer until the wheel and tire are removed from the vehicle. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is unloaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.

1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.

NOTE: Have an assistant press the brake pedal to keep the axle from turning.

2. Remove the nut and washer and discard the nut.

3. Remove the parking brake shoes.

CAUTION: Do not damage the boot while separating the toe link from the knuckle.

4. Remove the nut and bolt and separate the toe link from the wheel knuckle and discard the nut.

CAUTION: Do not damage the boot while separating the ball joint from the knuckle.

5. Remove the nut and bolt and separate the upper ball joint from the wheel knuckle and discard the nut.

CAUTION: Do not use a hammer to separate the outboard CV joint from the hub. Damage to the threads and internal CV joint components may result.

6. Using the special tool, press the outboard CV joint until it is loose from the hub.

7. Remove the nut and bolt and the wheel knuckle, hub and bearing as an assembly and discard the nut.

2. Remove the three bolts.

CAUTION: Make sure that the press adapter outside diameter is slightly smaller than the hub outside diameter or damage to the knuckle will result.

3. Using a suitable press, remove the hub from the bearing and discard the hub.

NOTE: The retainer ring is tapered and must be installed flat side down.

4. Remove and Discard the retainer ring.

5. Using a suitable press, remove the bearing from the wheel knuckle and discard the bearing.

CAUTION: The hub and bearing cannot be reused after disassembly.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.

The following might help you. It is the rotor removal process for your car, most of which you have apparently done:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and install two lug nuts with 3mm washers under them to hold the disc in place (if the two disc retaining screws are still in place, this will be unnecessary)
Remove the brake caliper. It is not necessary to disconnect the brake hose. After removing the caliper bolts, suspend the caliper out of the way with a piece of wire. Remove the two caliper mounting bracket to steering knuckle bolts.
Remove the driveaxle hub nut. To prevent the hub from turning, put a prybar between two of the wheel studs and against the ground, then loosen the nut.
Remove the cotter pin and loosen the lower ball joint nut about three full turns. Don’t remove it. Separate the lower control arm from the steering knuckle (you’ll need to get or rent a two-jaw puller for that).
Swing the knuckle/hub assembly out away from the car and push the driveaxle through the hub assembly until the end of the driveaxle is free of the hub. The shaft on the end of the driveaxle is often hard to dislodge from the hub, so you may have to tap the outer end of the shaft with a soft mallet until it pulls easily out of the hub.
After the hub and axle are separated, support the outer end of the driveaxle with a piece of wire to avoid unnecessary stain on the CV joint.
Remove the four bolts that hold thehub and brake disc assembly to the steering knuckle and remove the hub and disc.
Put a pry bar or something like one between two of the wheel studs to keep the whole thing from turning as you maybe put your feet against the bar, and then remove the four bolts that hold the disc to the hub assembly. Then you will have your disc. Installation is the reverse.
I hope this helps you. Give yourself plenty to time to deal with it.

remove tire remove axel nut (large nut in center of hub)remove brake rotor and caliper turn hub until you can see 3 bolts through round hole in hub turn hob until you remove all 3 bolts. Bolts are in triangel pattern. remove hub and bearing. good luck

Broken Lug Studs


You have to remove the hub to remove the bolts, if they won't come out by rotating the hub.

To remove the hub, take the cap off at the center of the hub (the cap would be poking you a the center of the hub, and is about 2 inches in diameter.

There should be a cotter key or something preventing the spindle nut from turning. Remove it. If there is a cover over the spindle nut, remove it. Take the spindle nut off. Pull lightly on the hub, and it will come off. Watch for the front bearing to pop out.

To reassemble, put hub back on spindle, put bearing and washer against bearing, thread on spindle nut and tighten while rotating hub. Back off 1/2 to 1 flat add cover (if used) and install cotter key.
