I recently bought a 1989 Cadillac, shortly after driving it, the head gasket blew, it also has a dry lifter. My problem is the guy i got it from said that it is not the original engine. How do i know if this is true?

Hello. I have a cadillac brougham 1989. as well. how i found out if my engine was original. I looked at the vin #. Mine has a Y included in the vin#. Y is 307 oldsmobile 8 cyl, 7 is 350 chevy. also there is a #9 Not sure if it is a 472. check what the firing order is on the engine you have. if it is counterclockwise its a 307 olds. if its clockwise its a 350 chevy or a 305 Vin# E. I strongly recomend that you buy a haynes repair book. it will help you alot. you an get it canadiantire (lilky have to order it) or go to amazon.com

Cadallic put several diferent engines in the 80s cars because of the EPA if I remember correctly. (I may be wrong)
you can tell what type of engine you should have by the vehicle vin number
V-6 is vin number -4
V8s(472,500,425 and 368 vin numbers RST( and ^
5.& (chev) vin number-7
5.0 (307 olds) vin number-Y
if you get under the car there will be a number stamped on the engine over the oil pan area.
you can match that to the Vin number on the car bottom of windshield or under the hood on the fire wall or in the area of the radiator i believe.
then if these match you may have to check a dealership or write to cadallic for the exact engine or have a knowledgeable person with cads tell you what it is.(this is what I did)

yes especially if you keep using the same head and are not getting it shaved or getting a reman head they are dirt cheap , also check on aftermarket head gasket from mr.gasket like a copper or blumax

Valve train ticking noise 1997 cadillac catera

The cats use hydraulic lifters. Just before your next oil change, or when you are down about a litre of oil, put a litre of transmission fluid (Dextron II) into the engine and drive it about 2to 300 miles and then change the oil and filter. You should hear the valve train noise dissappear within the 1st 20 or 30 miles.

Do not overfill!!!!!

This is assuming you have a plugged hydraulic lifter(s). If you have a worn cam or worn valve train, you need to remove the heads (both) and send them to a machine shop that does heads and re-install...new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets as well as any worn cams. valves etc....

Car really has to be worth it. At this point, if you love Cateras (I have 2 2001's), I would sell it the way it is and get a 00' or an 01'.

The 97' and 98's are not worth the trouble.......

Smoke coming out of tail pipe think i blew the head gasket

Check the water in the radiator and your oil. If either has contaminated the other then good chance your head gasket has gone.

Try a compression test. If one or two cylinders is way lower than the others also a good sign your head gasket is in trouble.

Solution.... Replace the head gasket :)

I have a 95(ChVy)TaHoe but clacks real loud due to no oil Help!

It sounds like your lifters are stuck. Put a can of seafoam or trans fluid in the oil drive it 50 miles or so and change the oil. Use a good oil and see if this helps. If it works it don't hurt to do this everytime before an oil change. This keeps your engine very clean

1990 Plymouth Horizon America troublre

The speedometer went out at 50,000 miles. The head gasket blew at 125,000 miles. I bought this car new when I started college, and it was the best front-wheel drive car I ever owned. The speedometer went at about 50,000 miles. I traced it to the printed circuit board, but Chrysler didn't carry the part, so I guessed my speed based on what gear I was in and my tachometer reading.
