Question about 2000 GMC Jimmy

2 Answers

I have a 2000 GMC Jimmy which needs the ignition lock cylinder replaced. Unfortunately, someone tried to steal it at one point and jammed a screwdriver into the cylinder. The key still goes in the cylinder, but it does not turn it. All directions I have found tell me to turn the ignition to on. How do I replace the cylinder if I can not turn the ignition to on?

You can drill it out. I have had to do this on 2 occassions. First...pull the cowel off around the steering wheel. Get a good light and look closely...some of the screws in the plastic can really hide on you. With cowel removed....look for and opening (small hole) where a little pin sits. Grab a very small screwdriver or pick and push down on that pin while you wiggle the key and try to turn it to the "on" position....you are supposed to put it in the "on" position in order to push the pin in and pull out the cylinder, but you may have some luck seeing as though the tumblers are broke inside. If this doesn't work...you may be drilling it out. Check with dealer too. If you have a plastic top on you key...and a security light and your car....a NAPA or Auto Zone part is not gonna work. You need to buy a key lock and cylinder assembly from the dealer and follow the key up procedure to reprogram the new key to the BCM. when you get a little further into getting it out...I can walk you through getting it in

There are times when one must turn to the experience of a dealer's service department. setting tumblers and installing lock cylinders is one of those for me.

I lost my only key to my 2000 gmc jimmy does this require a chip or is it just a regular key

No your vehicle doesn't have a chip key . You can just replace the key and lock cylinder . Without a key to copy ! Or the dealer can cut a key using the Vin #

The Passlock™ sensor is separate from the key and lock cylinder. The key and the lock cylinder work together in order to determine if the proper ignition key was used to start the vehicle.
The theft deterrent system has been incorporated into the body control module (BCM). The theft deterrent is provided in order to prevent the vehicle operation if the correct key is not used in order to start the vehicle. The ignition key turns the lock cylinder. The cylinder rotation produces an analog voltage code in the passlock™ sensor. This voltage code is received by the BCM. The BCM compares the voltage code to the previousely learned voltage code. If the codes match, a class 2 message is sent from the BCM to the vehicle control module (VCM)/powertrain control module (PCM). The message enables the fuel injectors.

2000 gmc Jimmy slt 4x4 how can I remove the key cylinder without being able to turn it to the run position because it won't turn at all?

Check to see if something is bound up stopping the key from turning. It is common for the steering wheel to be pushing against its lock and jamming the key. Also make sure the gear selector is all the way in park.

Key will not go onto the ignition. looks like there is a little peg in there. how do I fix?

It should go without saying that it is not possible to provide a diagnosis of your issue without knowing the YEAR, MAKE, and MODEL of your vehicle.
That being said, it sounds like someone tried to jimmy your ignition to steal your car! You may need to have a locksmith extract whatever was jammed into the ignition switch, and possibly replace the ignition tumbler.

Need to replace my lock cylinder on my 1998 GMC Jimmy. I have been told how to do it, and it sounds easy.....IF you can turn the key to the run position. Mine will not turn so I need to know how to get...

If the lock tumbler pins are jamming the lock, you can try tapping on the lock while you twist it. If that does not work, you can perform other remedies when you get the lock exposed. You need to remove the whole thing and that is the hardest part. Once it is out of the column you can use gravity and tapping to see if the pins will move. IF you cannot get past the jammed cylinder, you can take it to a lock smith.

2000 gmc Jimmy steering wheel is locked cannot turn key security system is on

Pull the steering wheel alittle hard til you can feel it move from stop to stop. Hold it in the center of that little bit of feeplay and then turn the key. It should unlock the wheel.

No sir,
There is no require to reprogram any thing. cause you are replacing only mechanical part not any electrical part, if replacing any part that have sensor or any wire then only need a reprogram. don't worry i have experience of same you can replace that. thanks

Put key in to start 2000 jimmy and no power and key will not come out

Sounds like you have a bad ignition switch. Not the ignition lock cylinder, the electrical switch.

2000 Jimmy , put in park , turn off key & key wont come out of ignition.

Does the transmission work in all 4 gears? I've seen bad ignition switches cause this. Not the ignition lock cylinder, the electrical switch.
