Cruise controls use Vacuum from the engine inlet manifold to operate the throttle linkage when cruising is engaged. If the hose that supplies the vacuum is not tight on the connections at either end, due to getting hard and/or splitting, the unit will not have enough vacuum to operate the linkage or in your case not maintain set speed. Check the hose that supplies vacuum to the cruise control, as well as all the hoses used for pollution control where they attach to the various pipes in the engine bay, for poor connections. They should be tight, not hard or split and not be able to be removed easily.

This is a computer controlled system (BCM) supply's power to switch .Voltage is supplied to the cruise control switch via the steering wheel control switch reference voltage circuit supplied by the BCM.
The following are the main components of the Cruise Control System:
• The accelerator pedal
• The stop lamp switch
• The body control module (BCM)
• The cruise control switches
• The engine control module (ECM)
• The throttle actuator control (TAC) motor
• The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)

Taking your vehicle to a quailfied repair shop would be your best option . Using a factory scan tool to view input data from switches and sensors is the only way to diagnose the cruise control on your vehicle . Just replacing parts does not cut it .

How do I troubleshoot the cruise control of a 2003 Alero?


It's probably a problem with cruise control module , located under the hood in engine compartment . Or a bad connection somewhere . Do you know how to do electrical testing ? Is the air bag light lit on the instrument cluster ?

Could have DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's stored .
DTC P1554
The powertrain control module (PCM) inhibits cruise control operation when certain conditions are not appropriate for cruise control operation. The PCM removes the ground from the cruise control inhibit signal circuit in order to disengage cruise control operation.
DTC P1585
Output driver modules (ODMs) are used by the powertrain control module (PCM) in order to turn on many of the current driven devices that are needed to control various engine and transaxle functions. DTC P1558 set indicates that an improper voltage level has been detected on the signal circuit which controls the cruise control inhibit circuit.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
• The PCM will not illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
• The PCM will store the conditions present when the DTC set as Failure Records data only.

This is very complex , first thing is have the vehicle checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes stored in the BCM , PCM !

When cruse is set, why does it not hold going down hill


Cruise control only maintains speed by utilizing the accelerator. To speed up it increases it and during slowing is removes it. The cruise control will not apply brakes in the event of a steep downhill run. In this case the vehicle will start to accelerate in the same manner as if the cruise control was not engaged. But in theses cases, most cruise controls, once the speed exceeds a certain amount above the set speed, will auto-disengage as a safety feature.

The odds of a fuse being the problem with a non operating cruise control are astronomical . Knowing how the cruise control works is a must in trouble shooting . The different modules involved ,the GMLAN serial data network etc... Here is the factory repair manual description .

When the normally open cruise control on/off switch is turned ON, the switch closes and the BCM sends a GMLAN serial data message to the ECM indicating that the on/off switch is active. Similarly, when the normally open + RES switch or the normally open - SET switch are pressed, the switch closes and the BCM detects the predetermined voltage signal on the cruise control switch signal circuit. The BCM sends a GMLAN serial data message to the ECM indicating that the + RES switch or the - SET switch is active. The + RES switch or the - SET switch will remain inactive when the BCM has not received the predetermined voltage signal from the on/off switch.
Unless the air bag light is lit too , your best bet would be to take your vehicle to a qualified repair shop.

This BCM controlled feature can be personalized to driver preference.
The BCM will automatically lock the vehicle doors if the following conditions exist:
• All vehicles doors are closed.
• The ignition is in the ON position.
• The vehicle is shifted out of PARK.

Where is the fuse for cruise control on a 2003 envoy


It is HVAC 1fuse #39 in the rear fuse block ,this powers the on/off switch for cruise control ! Fuse Block - Rear Beneath the left rear seat. What engine does it have ? 4.2 L or 5.3 l There is no vacuum involved in the operation of the cruise control ! Your vehicle has electronic throttle control .

When the normally open Set/Coast switch is pressed, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control set/coast switch signal circuit. To engage the cruise control system, turn the On/Off switch On and momentarily press the Set/Coast switch. The PCM will confirm that the cruise control enable criteria has been achieved. The PCM will engage the cruise control system and record the selected vehicle speed. The PCM sends a class 2 message to the instrument panel cluster in order to illuminate the cruise control indicator. Pressing the accelerator pedal, while the cruise control system is engaged, will allow the driver to override the cruise control system in order to accelerate the vehicle beyond the current set vehicle speed. When the accelerator pedal is released, the vehicle will decelerate and resume the current set vehicle speed. The driver can also override the current set vehicle speed via the Set/Coast switch and the Resume/Accel switch. When the cruise control system is engaged, pressing and holding the Set/Coast switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate from the current set vehicle speed without deactivating the cruise control system. When the Set/Coast switch is released, the PCM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the cruise control system is engaged, momentarily pressing the Set/Coast switch will allow the vehicle to decelerate at 1.6 km/h (1 mph) increments for each time that the Set/Coast is momentarily pressed, with a minimum vehicle speed of 37 km/h (23 mph). When the normally open Resume/Accel switch is activated, the switch closes and the PCM detects a high signal voltage on the cruise control resume/accel switch signal circuit. Activating and holding the Resume/Accel switch, when the cruise control system is engaged, will allow the vehicle to accelerate to a greater vehicle speed than the current set vehicle speed. When the Resume/Accel switch is released, the PCM will record the vehicle speed and maintain the vehicle speed as the new set vehicle speed. When the cruise control system is engaged, momentarily activating the Resume/Accel switch will allow the vehicle to accelerate at 1.6 km/h (1 mph) increments for each time that the Resume/Accel switch is momentarily activated, with the maximum acceleration total of 16 km/h (10 mph) over the current set vehicle speed . Momentarily activating the Resume/Accel switch, after the cruise control system has been disengaged by pressing the brake pedal, will recall the previous set vehicle speed that is recorded in the PCM.

No The cruise control senses wheel speed and controls the throttle to maintain the set speed. It will disengage automatically when vehicle speed falls below 25 mph.

Cruise control not working


The main cause for this problem is failure to maintain a set speed. Check the cruise control fuse. If the cruise control system fails to maintain the set speed, check the throttle linkage adjustment. couple things could had appened first the cruise control module or cru may have went out could be a malfuntion in the with some speed sensors or the vaccum lines have gotten to dry rotted to do the job necessary to maintain the speed
