If you can start off in 3 or 2 ,that is better than first and .the - downshift is for use as a a clutchless manual transmission

My truck won't come out of 4 wheel drive unless I stop and back up. Any suggestions?


from you description it appears that you use 4wd while on hard surface. driving 4wd on hard surface does not allow the wheels to slip and even out the torque build up in the axles and drive lines. This in turn jams the teeth of the transmissions and will not allow the selector to shift. By driving backwards you are releasing this torque binding. To stop the problem only use 4wd on snow,ice gravel,sandy and grass surfaces where the wheels are allowed to slip. Never on hard surfaced roads. Beside causing excessive wear in the transmission and tyres it increases fuel consumption

What setting should the transmission be set to


For fair weather driving 2wheel should be fine. for muddy or snowy conditions turn it to all wheel drive for increase traction.

What does the flashing HOLD light on the dash mean


The hold light means your transmission is in a kind of special mode for it for driving on snowy or muddy and slippery kinds of conditions. It also helps in going down steep hills and such. That's the best way I am able to describe it for you other than it aids in bad driving conditions to help keep your vehicle on the road. On your gear shifter you have the big button on the left side that you push in when you change gears. Right below that button should be a small button that you push in. This should activate or deactivate the "hold" system. It should also deactivate when the vehicle is shut off if working correctly. I did my best to explain it and I hope this helps you.

My gears are P- park R- reverse D- drive (2 Drives one with a box or circle around it) what is each D for


  • D with no circle is just "Drive." this a lower geared drive and best used around time as it provides a better pick up and over all response.
  • OD is "Over Drive" and used for cruising speeds ove 50+ MPH down the highway. Over Drive allows the vehicle to cruise at a more sustained speed with less engine speed and provides better fuel consumption.
  • While you are in Drive going down the highway and your speed reaches 50 MPH just switch gears into Over Drive and you will notice your car "relax" a bit. Remember you don't want to switch from Over Drive to Drive until you get down to around 45MPH or it can be a little rough on your engine and transmission.

BA Fairlane V8 - will not reach top 'gear' (Automatic) til 70kmh, so all city driving at 60kmh is done in 3rd. Can the computer be reset to reach 4th at 60 kmh ?


there may be a ecm flash that would enable you to lower the 4th gear lockup, but why would you want to do this? Unless you are driving on extended level surfaces the lower speed would 'lug' the engine (not good) and it would probably use more gas-the dealer may be able to do this, using a Tech II or similar device, don't know if they would though. Your overdrive gear is for highway speeds, not around town driving-it's actually better for your trans converter not to go into lockup at low speeds, and is probably suggested in your owners manual to put the selector in '3' for exclusive around-town driving.

You can change on the run but as a general rule stop to change to 4wd.except 2wd to 4wd high.Just slow down to about 15mph and back off the gas.
2wd high is normal running
4wd high(is full time 4wd)this is slippery roads or muddy roads.
4wd high lock For bad and slower slippery and rocky roads.
4wd low lock is for extreme 4wd conditions
Don't use the last 2 on the main roads or transfercase will be damaged

How do i use the "Hi/Lo" "shifter" in this 1991 Toyota Land Cruiser, what is it for? Why would i change it? I have driven this car for a long time now and never use i do i need to?


The hi/lo is a function of the 4 wheel drive on the vehicle. The hi ratio would be used when negotiating sand or mud for instance and the lo for steep inclines where more power is needed. This is like having a gear with better pulling ability than first gear. You will find driving in 2nd gear lo will give you the same speed as 1st gear high.
Do not engage the four wheel drive system when driving on hard surfaces ie tarmac or concrete. Use it only on surfaces where additional traction may be needed. It is a good idea to use the 4 wheel drive system at least once a month in order to lubricate those parts of the 4 wheel drive system that would otherwise be "dormant" when in 2 wheel drive.
If you have diff lock funtion on the vehicle it would be a good to idea to engege this as well but once again only on a soft surface. The reason being that the centre diff lock tends to bind and stay engaged due to it not being properly lubricated.
If it does bind(dash indicator stays lit) find a patch of grass or sand, engage reverse and drive a couple feet. If this does not disengage the lock turn the steering fully left or right and drive in a circle. This should then disengage the difflock.

Hi, I have a 1991 Suzuki JLX Vitara with the Front Right hub is locked into 4WD and I can seem to unlock it and the gearbox of late feels notchy, sometimes difficult to change into gear


Try hammering the front right hub with a wood or a rubber hammer while slowly reversing the vehicle, and keep on unlocking the hub while doing this.
spray it with lubrication first
yes, you need to change the gear oil in your gear box
Have your clutch re adjusted, it may be worn out , that's why you are having a hard time changing gears or have it bleed to keep the air out if you are using hydraulic.
If you dont hear any noise in your gear box while driving, its nothing serious, worst thing could be replacing your clutch lining and pressure plate.
