You may need a new bearing for the yoke, plus the seal of course.

Leaking seal could mean the yoke surface that the seal rubs on is rough, or that yoke is moving because of diff wear or misadjustment.

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. When the truck slows to a stop, and just as it stops, there is a very loud grinding noise that comes from the rear of the vehicle. I checked underneath and there is fluid...


The fluid splattered all over is most likely coming from the pinion seal. (The seal at the front of the differential where the driveshaft yoke goes in.) Normally, you would remove the driveshaft and the pinion yoke to relace the seal. The grinding however, leads me to believe that the seal leaking is a RESULT not a CAUSE of your problem. The way you describe it sounds like you may have some serious pinion and/or ring gear damage inside the differential.
If this is the case, there are severl ways to go about repairing this. You could tear your differential apart and replace the defective/damaged parts inside. You could replace your differential with a used one from a salvage yard. You could replace your differential with a remanufactured differential assembly.

To check for damage, remove the rear cover from the differential and check for metal in the oil and in the bottom of the housing. You can also turn the ring gear around and check for broken teeth. You can also inspect the spider gears and pinion gear for damage.

How do i replace a driveshaft for a 1997 lincon cotanental

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Mark the position of the driveshaft yoke on the axle companion flange so they can be reassembled in the same way to maintain balance.
  3. Remove the flange bolts and disconnect the driveshaft from the axle companion flange.
  4. Allow the rear of the driveshaft to drop down slightly.
  5. Pull the driveshaft and slip yoke rearward until the yoke just clears the transmission extension housing seal. Mark the position of the slip yoke in relation to the transmission output shaft, then remove the driveshaft.
  6. Plug the transmission to prevent fluid leakage. To install:
  7. Lubricate the yoke splines with suitable grease.
  8. Remove the plug from the transmission and inspect the extension housing seal; replace if necessary.
  9. Align the slip yoke and output shaft with the marks made at removal and install the yoke into the transmission extension housing. Be careful not to bottom the slip yoke hard against the transmission seal.
  10. Rotate the axle flange, as necessary, to align the marks made during removal.
  11. Install the driveshaft yoke to the axle flange. Install the bolts and tighten to 71–95 ft. lbs. (95–130 Nm).
  12. Lower the vehicle.

Changing rear axle seal on 78 ford f150. looking for diagram.


You probably have the 9 inch differential. If it is a rear wheel seal remove the tire and wheel assembly. Be sure to use a jack stand so you don't have the vehicle fall on you. Remove the 4 retaining bolts that hold the backing plate onto the housing. Pull the axle from the axle tube. It may be stubborn at removal. If it is the pinion seal remove the drive line. Remove the pinion nut that rests inside the yoke. Try to use an impact tool for easy removal. Once the nut is off the yoke willcome off. You may need a puller to help in removal. One the yoke is off remove the pinion shaft seal. Replace with a new seal. install the yoke and the washer and then the pinion nut. Re-torque the pinion nut to 150 foot pounds.

Front seal on rear end is leaking how hard is


Not hard to do. You need to remove the drive shaft, to get to the nut that holds the rear yoke from the differential. Once the rear yoke has been removed, you can replace the O ring seal from the differential by using a screw driver to pry out the old seal. Try not to damage it to much so you can use it to help tap in the new seal. Once the seal is out place the new seal in place by hand and then place the old old seal on it and tap in the new seal with a small hammer. Take care to ensure that the new seal goes in straight and place some grease on the seal before you place the yoke back in to place. Tighten up the yoke nut and you may want to replace the U joint at this time too since it's off the truck. Once everything it back together, check the differential oil level and top off. Good luck and hope this helps, you can get the parts at Auto Zone and they can also give you the step by step instructions to getting the job done with common tools. The hardest part that i can see you having is the removal of the yoke nut, the job takes about an hour to do so if your going to have a garage to the job the most would be 1.5 hours but should take them about 30 min to do.

if it is the seal, you will have to remove the caliper and rotor, remove the differential cover and remove the bolt and pin inside the diff carrier housing. push in the axle and remove the axle clip and pull out the axle use a seal puller or prybar to remove seal reverse the steps to assemble

The Pinion Yoke Nut, 9.75" Axle. the torq spec. is 370 Nm. -- 273 Lb ft.

Pinion seal leaking


check your rear diff vent if pluged clean it out and clean up the pinion seal.sometimes if the leak is caused by pluged vent and has not been leaking long once vent is clean sometimes the leak will stop.there is not a specific torque amount because it is rotational torque(how hard to turn pinion).there is a crush sleve on the pinion and if torqued too tight or too loose brg preload will be wrong and brg damage could result.mark and remove drive shaft.remove rear wheels,brakes,axles.so when turning pinion you dont have any drag from brakes or axles.mark the position of the yoke on the pinion.remove yoke,replace seal,reinstall yoke be sure to replace pinion nut.tighten nut until it takes the exact same amount of force to turn pinion as before taking original pinion nut off.hope this helps.
