Remove the belt and spin the pully by hand listen for noise chances are the clutch bearing is going bad not the compressor and you can replace the clutch with out loosing freon usually if the compressor bearing is out you have lost freon out seal .

Ac makes whining noise on a 2004 Pontiac grand prix

Is the whining noise coming from the engine compartment where the compressor is located or is the noise coming from inside the car? If the noise if coming from inside the car it could be your blower. When a blower wears down the bushing is the first thing to wear down and it begins to have play. That makes the blower/fan vibrate making a loud whining noise. Replacing the blower could solve that whining noise.
If the noise if coming from the AC compressor, it also could be a bad bearing within the compressor.

i have run across alot of new alternators especially rebuilt ones that are faulty . b 4 replacing the steering pump I would pull the alt and have it checked. if you did away with the a/c compressor completely then that eliminates the a/c comp. clutch. The power steering being bad the noise should change when you turn sharply.

It sounds like a belt thats slipping. You have a sticking puley somewhere, take off the belt and rotate all of the pulleys. Usually its an AC compressor pulley so pay special attention to it. The whining noise that it makes while turning, is it the same as the squealing noise? If so it could be a problem with the pump, check the fluid level and see if its an odd color or has an odd odor (like burnt or black). Hope this helps!

How do you put a a/c bypass pulley on a 1998 Pontiac grand prix GTP on

You need to remove the old a/c compressor and install the dummy pully in its mounting holes. Make sure that the system is empty before disconnecting any a/c lines.
