The check engine light is on to alert you to a failure in the system, that is most likely related to the loss of overdrive, have the system tested for the fault code that is stored in the computers memory, any Kragen or Autozone parts store will do this test for free. You will most likely get a code for a loss of signal from the VSS (vehicle speed sensor), that loss will cause the no OD symptom you have.
