Hello Pande.

I am wondering if the proper fuel pump was installed.
You did not list your model, year or engine size so I can't give you any specifications.
Have the fuel pressure tested and compare it to what it should be.
Thank you for using FixYa.

What cause the engine to run rich and black smoke coming from tail pipe?

hmmm sounds like the fuel pump is more of the issue as its sending too much fuel into the motor making it run rich or the gas that your using is too rich for the motor itself

Black smoke comes from exaust when I start. Could it overfuel and how can I fix it if its a new carb on my 88 2e 12valve

assuning there is nothing major wrong, get some forte injector and use it as recommended. I once had a renault laguna diesel fail an MOT test, a roadworthiness test that is, on emissions...it was absolutely chucking out black smoke but the engine ran well. I put 2 bottles of injector cleaner in the half full tank and went out for an eighty mile drive revving the engine in the lower gears. I returned to the testing station an hour and a half later and the engine was running perfectly.
Alternatively, assuming the engine runs well but is just a little smokey, have it terracleaned, this will remove most of the carbon deposits from the engine/exhaust and should increase the life of your engine simultaneously improving fuel economy

1991 chevy van g20 blowing out black smoke

The most typical reason is that the fuel pump is getting weak. You may think I am nuts. Let me explain. The fuel injectors, on a throttle-body system, need pressure to atomize the fuel properly. With low pressure, the fuel just runs out of the injecot nozzles and puddles in the intake manifold. Then it literally "runs" into the engine. It does not burn properly and produces alot of black smoke. Fuel mileage goes way down, also. Replace the fuel pump and fuel filter, and you will be amazed. Good Luck.

Black smoke under acceleration that comes and goes. Have changed mass air flow sensor and did not help. Model is 2005 six speed turbo diesel

Black smoke indicates you are running rich. You may have to address the fuel injectors to make sure one is not stuck open. After replacing the MAF censor this would be my next step. Also your turbo seal might be leaking causing your truck to run rich throwing off the o2 censor. Also you can get black smoke from turbo blowby. Not burning oil but actual oil passing the rear turbine seal and getting into the exhaust. This should give you a few good places to check out. Good luck to you.

Black exhaust smoke

black smoke is the vehicle is running rich, to much fuel. excess fuel enters the cylinder and does not burn completely. poor fuel milage is also a common complaint when black smoke comes out tailpipe. ( its running rich ). have a good day !

Black smoke indicates no air, check your air filter, if you have done that and it is ok, check the PCV valve. Thats about all that I can suggest. Hope that helps.

If your light for o2 sensor has been on than the culprit is you need to replace the sensor. The o2 sensor tells the computer to adjust the air fuel mixture, if you have a bad one it will make your car run too rich because the ECM is guessing what the air fuel ratio should be, hence the reason you have all that black smoke. Change the sensor and your car will run like new and save you alot of gas.
