This is a common problem and a technical bulletin is already there for the same :-

Electronic Throttle Module - Uneven Idle

S70/V70 1999-2000/C70 1999- S80 1999-/V70/S60 2001-Section2 Group25
No. 0023 Year01 Month07

Vehicles involved: All equipped with Electronic Throttle Module

Electronic Throttle Module (ETM), Cleaning

Carbon deposits can form in the throttle module bore on cars frequently driven short distances. This residue can cause idle speed to become uneven and noticeable to the driver especially with the increased load produced by the air conditioning compressor cycling on and off. This Service Bulletin describes how to clean the throttle module bore.

Description Quantity Part no. Cleaner H 1 XXXXXXX

Electronic Throttle Module (ETM), Cleaning

1 Preparations

Removing and installing the throttle unit see VADIS:

Replacement and installation

Function group 25

"Replace the throttle unit".

2 Cleaning the ETM

Warning! Use a fume hood or ensure that ventilation is good. DO NOT submerge throttle unit in cleaning solvent. ONLY use cleaning solvent recommended in this bulletin.

Caution! Do not scrape or use a rotary wire brush to clean the unit.

Clean the ETM bore using cleaner H (P/N XXXXXXX-9) and a soft bristle brush.

Ensure that all the residue is removed from the shaded surfaces.

Carefully wipe the bore clean on both sides of the throttle plate.

Flush the ETM bore using cleaner H on both sides of the throttle plate.

Check that there is no residue in the bore or on the throttle plate. Any remaining residue can promote new residue build up.

Repeat the procedure if necessary.

Install the throttle body

It's hard to say how complicated it would be for a "do it yourselfer", but the labor is about 2 hours, (which would be $150 here, east coast of the US) with an average labor rate of $75 per hour.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

if you your vechicle has less than 200k miles and is less than ten years old then you can take it to a certifed Volvo dealership and ask them to repair, update software, replace ETM and throttle body under their 6-2005 "warranty" agreement (not a recall, you must call and ask)...If not the cleaning doesn't work then I suggest sending the throttle body to XeMODeX Technologies in Canada, 1-888-712-2525. you can google "vexed volvo" on internet to find out more.

Idle fluctuate s

there is a bleed air plug in the upper radiator hose. be very careful because you can break the plug by trying to turn it full turns. it only needs to be turned about a quarter of a turn to half. you should also look into changing the pcv elbow. it gets a hole worn in it and causes the car to idle rough and even cut off in the drive thru line or traffic light. it is located towards the back of the engine and you may have to take off the intake cover and cam. i hope this helps.

My 2010 buick 3.8 ltr super charged eng shuts off while im driving why

Remove the air cleaner intake tube and buy some throttle body cleaner spray on a rag open throttle manually and clean the most carbon you can from around the flap.
If you remove the throttle body and clean it outside of vehicle it will be much better.
If the intake is plastic then you will have rubber o ring behind throttle body no need to replace it is reusable.
If the intake is aluminum then it will have paper gasket and the possibilitys of breaking it is high. So if you decide to remove make sure someone has gasket in stock whether its dealer or local autoparts.

Idle air control is built in to throttle body it gets excessive carbon deposits if you use low octane fuel like (87) when it fills with carbon it restricts the air amount at closed throttle and cause car to shut off.

1996 mercedes c280 dies when put in drive

Engine stalls or RPM fluctuates at idle up and down or dies near idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve but always run a OBD2 fault code as well as the cleaning procedure. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

May be a cooling sensor issue . If you can hook a scan tool to it and watch the coolant temp pid while idling high it may show a fluctuating reading .

This sounds like a classic bad connection either at the battery or engine ground. Check and recheck all your connections and be sure they are clean and tight.
