Question about 1989 Ford Bronco

1 Answer

Thought the key ignition on my truck went bad but it isn't that, apparently it's the neutral safety/back-up light switch that is broken. Do you know where it's located on the truck and how to bypass it?

It is on the transmission it is like a 3 wire plug normally the center wire is hot the other wires is backup light and the other is for enganging the starter.

Truck wont start

It could be the fender mounted starter relay under the hood. Or if you took off the small wire at that relay (its from the ignition switch), it should have voltage when the key is held in start. If it does have power in start, probably the relay. If no power in start, either the switch or the neutral safety switch is acting up.

Probably not a fuse. When turning the key to on, does it give indication of power in and power out of the ignition switch-do the warning lights and gauges on the dash turn on?
If the key switch is sending power, next thing to check is the starter motor. You could take it off and have it tested, it and the starter solenoid mounted on the starter, or you could do some quick electrical testing yourself, if you have a test light or multi-meter.

If you pull off the small purple wire to the starter solenoid on the starter, you should check if the wire has power when the key is held in crank position. If it does have power, the starter or solenoid is faulty. If no power on the purple wire in start, then power is lost between the key switch and the solenoid. This part of the start circuit includes the neutral safety switch on the transmission (or the clutch switch if manual transmission), and a starter relay somewhere under the hood. Check the neutral safety switch for continuity in park or neutral. The start wire out of the ignition switch goes to this safety switch, and power is passed on to the starter if gear is in park or neutral.
Not likely the starter relay is bad, but you may need to find and check it, if all else fails.

2002 Jeep Liberty 3.7 automatic wont turn the starter over. LIghts good. Battery good. Could it be the starter, cables to the starter, neutral safety switch?

have same problem, ratan9 solution is pretty junk and I dont know why waste time posting it. After talking to local shop, to "test" the neutral safety switch, try to start in neutral, try to move shifter "farther" into park and turn key, listen to any clicks possible. If moving to neutral starts it you've got a bad switch. All the searching i've done it's either the safety switch, the ignition switch or a short in the harness somewhere

Broken flywheel teeth will give you an unmistakable noise when starting. Either the starter drive is getting stuck or putting it in neutral is allowing you to start it because the neutral safety switch is either out of adjustment or bad. (I'd bet on the switch)

Shift indicator in dash does not light

did it ever show erratically before it went out?? if so it is ur neutral safety switch mounted on the side of the transmission, on the shifter rod. call up advanced auto parts and price one out...most of the time if there are no scratches or marks they will take it back for a full refund. try this out and your shift indicator should light back up..

It sounds like the electrical part of the ignition switch has gone bad or you have a loose wire from the swich to the starter.
