Question about 1989 Ford F 150

1 Answer

I have a Ford F150 5.0L 2 Wheel Dr. The engine would turn and acts like it will run but it fails. I replaced the fuel filter and checked the pumps and it is working and supplying fuel to the engine. I have also check one of the spark plug and it has a spark. I replaced the coil and its still not working. I have heard about "IGNITION MODULE" but I'm not sure where it is located at. I'm not even sure if this is the problem. Please help! Thanks.

Check and see if there is a white ballast resistor between the ignittion module and the hot wire the resistor would go out and as long as you cranked on it it would act like it was trying to start and when you quit cranking on it it would die.

Check for spark to the sparkplug. Try a shot of starting fluid as having gas pumping and having the fuel injectors opening are 2 different things. If you have spark, then the fuel injectors may not be working. Quick diagnosis is to use starting fluid and see if engine tries to run. This indicates problem is not lack of spark but lack of fuel getting into cylinders.

Just trying to get the motor to turn over. and trying to locate the fuel filter and how to replace it

A fuel filter will not cause a no start, check the pressure and see if you have any. Spray starting fluid into the intake and see if it starts and stalls, that indicated no fuel pressure. Also run a MECS OBD1 computer control system fault code test, you will need a MECS (Mazda Electronic control system) system scanner to do that or a Ford Star tester with a MECS adapter kit. (Ford owned a controlling interest Mazda then and now) You may just have a failed fuel pump.

A 460 engine that acts like its not getting enough fuel. Will start but runs as if only on half the cylinders missing badly or such.

Check your running fuel pump pressure. If (as I suspect) it's too low, first try changing your fuel filter. After changing the filter, recheck the running fuel pump pressure. If still low, check you fuel pump pressure regulator. If OK, you may need a new fuel pump.

Also probably would be a good idea to replace you air filter.

Good luck!

Try replacing the fuel filter first, but it sounds like your loosing your fuel pressure prim when the fuel pump is not working. The fuel pressure should be 62-65 PSI with the engine not running the the ignition key turned on and should drop about 5 psi when the engine is running. If you turn the engine off and check the fuel pressure, it stat steady for morn then 15min. If it drops fast, then you have a leak at your fuel pressure regulator (common) or your return fuel check valve which is located at your fuel sending unit.
Start with the simple and replace the fuel filter, it could just be to dirty to pressurize the fuel system fast enough giving you the hard start.
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck

check you fuel pressure at the fuel rail, if you have pressure (witch i doubt) then look at injectors, otherwise start with the cheap stuff and work up to others, start with a fuel filter and if that dont help look at a in tank pump or the high pressure pump.

1991 ford explorer run good one sec then run like it not enough gas is there. Then run good again.Changed wire's and plug's gas fliter. What else should I do?

you don't say whether you have had the trouble codes tested, this is a very important 1st test with a problem like you have, here is how you test for trouble codes, here is how u do that test, go to the link

http://check-engine-light-codes.blogspot.com/2006/04/ford-1985-95-obd1-code-self-retrieval.html

if not codes show then suspect the fuel pump may be worn out and losing pressure or the MAF (Mass Airflow) sensor may be defective, the MAF is located in the large air intake pipe to the engine at the air filter, to test the fuel pressure u will need to buy a fuel pressure test tool for Ford cars and trucks, it is better cost wise to just let someone test this at a shop, remember the truck must be acting up for the test to be valid.

It sounds like and ignition module is failing periodically and must be replaced, when the engine reaches a certain temperature threshold the electrical component arc out from the silicon sealant that encases the capacitance discharge component.

the automatic gas shut off switch is located in the trunk tucked up under the wheel well I think on the left side for that car. you need to feel around for it and press a button on it to reset it.

You need to check spark plugs/wires/distributor cap.
Also good idea to check/replace fuel filter/air filter. It might be also bad fuel pump.
Good Luck
