Question about 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer

1 Answer

I think my fan belt just went on my 02 trailblazer. I have an appointment with my mechanic in 2 days but, is it safe to drive to his shop? It has a burning smell when I start the truck. I have not been driving it since this happened.

I annot imagine why your mechanic would say it is okay to drive to his shop. You will not have coolant flow, and may not have steering assist. I believe it is safer to have it towed. How bad do you not want to cause something expensive??

I have an 04 cavalier. Code P0172 mechanic changed upstream 02 senor. light came back on. Brought back to mechanic he changed the downstream, light came back on. I changed fuel filter, spark plugs, oil...

Think your guy changed O2 Sensors ,
but didn't consider that your sensors PO172
is rich, because it is correcting for a lean condition

I'am going to really guess here

The EVAP has leaks, but no codes set,
partially driving the system lean (Vacuum Leaks)

The Converter is sort of out there as
not working well either

I would smoke the EVAP System and everything else,
intake manifold etc

I think you will find this by MAYBE even just looking
for a bad hose leak

Is that data from your mechanics scanner ?
What is their theory ?

Bank 1 has a vacuum leak I think !! ??

When do you change a timing belt on an 02 xterra

you would want to verify, but most likely 90,000 to 100,000 miles.

New water pump.... new timing belt.... new radiator cap... but the idiot mechanic has not done the obvious.

1. Change the coolant thermostat located under the hose fitting on the manifold where the top radiator hose connects to the engine.

2. Check the radiator fan switch for proper operation. When in doubt change it out. A $30.00 switch isn't worth risking a complete engine overhall.

3. Do a compression check on the engine to make sure all cylinders have close to the same amount of comression. Overheating can cause head gaskets to weaken and fail. Performing the compression check would verify that both the cylinder head, valves and head gasket are still in good working order.

4. (Applicable only to cars with a belt driven fan) Does the fan have a fan clutch? I did not look it up yet. If it does then the fan clutch can also be a problem if it is not turning the fan when the engine is hot.

For cars with an electric fan the switch in step 2 applies as does checking the fan for proper operation.

5. Fire your mechanic! If there is one thing I hate it is a mechanic that only does half the job vs checking out all possible causes! Your car should have never left the shop in a state that it could over heat AGAIN. Time to have a chat with she service manager and the service managers' boss! They owe you some free labor!

Thanks for using FixYa.

2003 Trailblazer loses power, I am getting codes P1271 and P1271p/d

#PIT3138A: 02-05 Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile and GMC Mid-Sized Utilities Reduced Power Light On and DTC P1680 P1221 and/or P1271 Stored in the PCM - kw fan clutch SES light power MIL 4.2 LL8 - (Nov 1, 2004)
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.
Condition/Concern:
Reduced power light on and DTC P1680 P1221 and/or P1271 stored in the PCM
Recommendation/Instructions:
Monitor the 5V reference to the Accelerator Pedal Position ( APP ) sensor, circuit 1274, using Peak Min/Max on a Fluke 87. Refer to Si document 1454678 for the 5V reference schematics. Command the fan clutch control "on" with the Tech 2 at 50%. If when commanding the fan clutch on, the 5V reverence spikes to battery voltage, the concern is the 5V reference shorted to battery voltage intermittently inside cooling fan clutch. Replace the fan clutch to repair this concern.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.
Models:
(02 - 05 Chevrolet Trailblazer and Trailblazer EXT) and (02 - 05 GMC Envoy, Envoy XL and Envoy XUV ) and (02 - 05 Buick Rainier) and (02 - 04 Oldsmobile Bravada)

Just replaced the water pump on my 2004 trailblazer the other day, removed the fan to get the water pump out. You do not have to remove the fan just to change the belt.
