Question about 2000 Buick LeSabre

Intermittent automatic transmission clunking when shifting gears.

Engine mounts have been checked and several replaced. Problem still exists. Clunking sound on shifting is inermittment. I can drive for several days and the transmission shifts smoothly without any "clunking." Then without any warning the "clunking" sound on shifting will reappear for a period of time and then quit.

The auto mechanics working the problem have used the computer diagnostic when driving around and all the readings are normal when not "clunking." They have been unable to get the "clunking" to reappear when the computer diagnostic is in place and they are driving around.

Hello Joe.
It's a little difficult to be specific with a fix to your problem with little detail of the noise.
But a common problem with your LeSabre is engine mounts.
When an engine mount breaks it allows the engine/transmission to move too far and create a clunk.
To check if this is the problem, open the hood, stand to the side of the car, and observe how much the engine moves back and forth while someone shifts from reverse to drive (make sure the driver has the park brake firmly set and foot on the brake pedal).
A little throttle may be required at the same time as the brakes are applied to lift the engine/trans out of the broken mount.Do this very carefully.
Some movement is normal, an inch or two. But if the engine moves a lot and clunks back down you will likely have a bad mount.
It could be a front or rear mount so that is why you need to do this in reverse and drive.
I hope this helps you with your problem. Thank you for using FixYa.

Escort wagon automatic wont shift into any gear

You may need the transmission serviced with new fluid, so have that done first, if that doesn't cure the problem you will need an overhaul.

It could be lash in the differential which is normal, but it could also be a loose u-joint in the driveshaft. Check the rear driveshaft u-joints.
