This is fairly easy to do if you have the right tools. Wheel puller, socket set, philips and or torx screw driver or long bits.

1. Remove the hazard switch, there is a screw in it.
2 Either pop out the center horn button or remove screws to allow it to come off. (unhook horn connection)
3. There will be a retaining clip over top of the steering wheel nut, take that off.
4 Remove the nut.
5 Attach the wheel puller and snug it up good, and gently tap the column stud with a hammer (will help to loosen it)
6. Once the steering wheel is off, take a second to look over what is there.
7 There should be a lock plate that looks somewhat like a gear. This needs to be compressed for you to be able to remove a thin clip.( either a compression tool or a hammer wedged against your chest) Removing this can be tricky, the best way is to take a medium to smaller flat screw driver and either a scratch awl or an ice pick use the screw driver to put tension on the clip as you get the awl under the clip where it is open gently working the clip back and up and down until it is removed.
VERY Important DO NOT lose the clip.
8. There will be 2-4 screws that holds the turn signal assembly in, once these are out, you should be able to pull on it and pill it up out of the way somewhat.
9. There is 1 screw that holds the ignition in, remove that and slide the ignition out.

Please reply if you have problems and I will be happy to help out.

I have an S 17 1998 Volvo secondary ignition put in lost key only able to make the door key which was the original ignition key at the Volvo dealer so still don't have key how do i unlock the steering...

You will have to remove the lock and then make sure the steering wheel lock is permanently disengaged before putting the column back together without the lock cylinder. While you are there, you can also remove the ignition switch and reconnect it external to the column so you can use it. Here is the procedure: Except 240 Series
See Figures 1 and 2

Before working the steering system, read the SRS service precautions in Chassis Electrical .

  1. Place the front wheels in straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable AND TAPE the cable end.
  3. Remove the air bag assembly.
  4. Remove the steering wheel.
  5. Remove the contact reel assembly.
  6. Remove the combination switch.
  7. Remove the steering column rake adjustment lever using a 0.12 in. (3mm) hex wrench.
  8. Remove the parking plate around the steering tube (4 screws).
  9. Disconnect the ignition lock connector.
  10. Turn the ignition switch to position I .
  11. Take a 0.079 inch (2mm) drift and press down the tumblers in the cylinder.
  12. Remove the lock assembly.
To install:
  1. Install the steering lock assembly.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to position I and press down the tumblers with a suitable drift
  3. Install the lock assembly.
  4. Install the combination switch assembly.
  5. Install the contact reel.
  6. Install the steering wheel.
  7. Install the air bag assembly.

When connecting the battery, make sure that no one is in the vehicle in case of an SRS malfunction causing accidental air bag deployment.

  1. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Check the vehicle operation and SRS system for fault codes.

Key locked in ignition 06 DTS and electonics dead

It could be a bad ignition key assembly. The key assembly has a unit attached to it to read the Security code in the key and sometimes when these start to go bad they overheat bad. Go have it checked out by your mechanic.
