Is needle pointing down a fuel pump problem?

If you thumped on your fuel gauge and it went back up after pointing on 0 it sounds like a bad fuel gauge problem. But, that would not make it die unless you have a short in the electric system causing it to go faulty. How does it idle in park? Any hesitation on acceleration?

I have a 2001 chevy silverado 1500 with a 4800 vortec engine. it starts and idels fine but when ever i give it gas, the engine starts to sputter and dies. ive already changed the fuel filter and spark plug...

This sounds llike weak feul pressure, the fuelpump may need replacing, the first thing to do is have the fuel pressure tested and if the pressure is low then have the pump replaced. the pump is located inside the fuel tank and the tank will need to be dropped to replace the pump, good luck ,

Would not run unless gas pedal to floor and would only go 15 mph max, stalled, now won't start

that sounds like either a fuel pump or possibly a severely blocked fuel filter. If your gas tank empty?

My 2001 chevy silverado is having trouble starting i changed the fule filter and i can hear my fule pump runing but it takes right at 3 cranks for it to start.. It would try to start but just die on me......

Sounds like it. On new automobiles the fuel pump is in the gas tank, cools the pump, but you can disconnect the pump and put on an outside pump instead of pulling the gas tank and replacing gas pump and tank. Leave old pump in gas tank.

2000 silverado will start but wont stay running just dies.

I also agree it sounds like a fuel pump issue. Its easiest to remove the box (6 bolts {need impact wrench} disconnect wires at plugs and disconnect gas filler hose) and lift box up. A hoist is easiest but 6 people can lift it easily. The fuel pump can easily then be replaced. Takes about 1 1/2 hrs. to do entire job this way and its so much easier!
Good Luck!

Has trouble accelerating sounds like its missing and is bogging

Sounds like a timing problem to me. I would look at this first. It could be fuel related too. The old carburated engines would act like this when the accelerater pump on the carb would go bad.

Good Luck
