The problem could be plugged up catalytic convert it is related to tune up.One more thing fuel filter too. Check auto zone if they have anything to burn out catalytic. When you change with standard catalytic you will have code PO420 will be a headache!!!!!!!! 80% cars have this problem Think twice before doing anything.
surge, lopes, hunts, all same. but does it do this hot/cold or both engine temps.?????????
Im and expert on this.... done many and is related to EFI fuel controls
big time..... (ive even programmed Megasquirts to do this)
first the rules then causes.
Rule 1, The EFI controls idle at all times. so that proves.
Macro reasons.
1: EFI lost control. (stuck ISC?)
2: Engine is missiing (too rich, too lean or never tuned up)
3: or both, usually #2 causes 1 ,
there are ways to solve this riddle
my ways are simple
i test the ISC, see if it works, (unplug it or power it with 12v power supply, ) Id clean the ISC first.
this old car 1992 , scan tools are hard to find for OBD1 cars.
so cant look to see if CLosed loop is working, I can with a scope
but you dont have a scope.
you could put in the diagnostic check jumper and hope for an error code to flash out.
you can look as spark plugs (newones work wonder) and see
if its burning fuel correctly (like old school carb days)
black?> white tips>
all engine carbs and EFI all will surge when lean,.
all, and on EFI it will in fact try to stop the surge,
if lean enough the EFI can actually make the surge worse
is it tries desperately to correct the impossible.@!
that be surge.
i learnd that loping my mule one day.. LOL
It could be fuel pressure. Also check for posible trouble codes stored in the PCM that could be related to a faulty engine managment component. You may also try to spray out the throttle body with intake cleaner and inspect the spark plugs.
Mine is fresh out of the shop for this very reason. First Ford shop could not find the issue. Second one found a spark plug wire that had melted against the engine (or exhaust) and it would short out, causing the engine to lope and surge.
Online, I found that it could also be caused by moisture in the Power Control Module, which many have resolved by coating the connector with silicone.
Here is the most common cause of surges and stalls, it is the idle speed control air-bypass valve and throttle valve, they get full of gunk over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
***** is correct adn yoru issues are not a quick fix.. some sensor is acting up and /or computer is being told to do something .....get full scope done and dig towards cause that way
