If the engine isn't burning the oil then it must be leaking out somewhere.

2001 geo tracker burning oil

Hi Karen, IM AL the owner of Big As Auto Repair.

Karen, the first thing that needs to be checked in your question: Is it burning oil or is it leaking oil. Because both issues will cause the oil level to go down on the dip stick. Find out which is happening through a qualified technician before spending any money on repairs. Please visit my auto-repair-website if you have any other questions: http://www.bigasautorepair.com/

Loss of engine power and excessive oil consumption

You had the codes read out at a local parts place? Most will do it free.
Oil has to be going some place. If it's not on the road, then I would certainly expect smoke. The performance may have nothing to do with the oil consumption, you should not assume they're connected. I had similar oil loss, turned out to be a leak in the oil filter, only leaked when on the road, not in my garage.

Engine oil consumption one liter per 3000 KM.

It depends on why/where the oil is going. The following discussion presumes there are no visible leaks, Be sure and check the drain hole on the bell housing for oil leakage.

If you are using a low viscosity non-synthetic oil, and are in a hot climate, and you routinely drive at freeway speeds, up to 15% of the oil will evaporate!!
The rate it is using is not 'excessive', and is no concern unless it increases over time.
It is actually PREFERRED (for long engine life) to have some consumption requiring fresh oil addition between changes.
Another sneaky cause can be a mis-marked dipstick leading to overfilling the crankcase. Next oil change, carefully note the oil level after running a few minutes, letting it sit 5 minutes then checking--with ONLY the manual stated quantity (use only the amount specified)
You might try running the oil level near the minimum level to see if the rate of use decreases.

My 2008 chevy avalanche is burning 1 quart of oil every 1000 miles

How many miles on your vehicle ? Do you see any leak spots on the ground from the truck ? Blue exhaust , oil burning , valve guide seals , piston rings , PCV clogged .

Oil Consumption Diagnosis
Checks
Causes
Excessive oil consumption, not due to leaks, is the use of 1 L (1 qt) or more of engine oil within 3 200 kilometers (2,000 miles).
Preliminary
The causes of excessive oil consumption may include the following conditions:
• External oil leaks
Refer to Oil Leak Diagnosis .
• Incorrect oil level or improper reading of the oil level indicator
With the vehicle on a level surface, run the engine for a few minutes, allow adequate drain down time, 2-3 minutes, and measure for the correct engine oil level.
• Improper oil viscosity
Refer to the vehicle owners manual and use the recommended SAE grade and viscosity for the prevailing temperatures.
• Continuous high speed driving and/or severe usage
• Crankcase ventilation system restrictions or malfunctioning components
Refer to Crankcase Ventilation System Inspection/Diagnosis .
• Worn valve guides and/or valve stems
• Worn or improperly installed valve stem oil seals
Refer to Spark Plug Inspection .
• Piston rings broken, worn, or not seated properly
Allow adequate time for the rings to seat.
Replace worn piston rings, as necessary.
Refer to Cylinder Leakage Test .
• Piston and rings improperly installed or not fitted to the cylinder bore
Refer to Lower Engine Noise, Regardless of Engine Speed

2006 Town & Country burning oil excessively. 40,000 miles; burning 1 quart every 1000 miles; no signs of the oil anywhere

At 40K miles it shouldn't burn that much oil, unless the motor has been abused or overheated. With no signs of oil leaks, the engine must be burning it via the exhaust,

Change the oil (use a good quality oil) and then observe oil consumption.

If it still uses excessive oil check further as below:-
1) if it blows blue smoke on steady accelleration (pistons or ring wear),
or
2) only blows blue smoke on initial accelleration after a period of steady coasting or de-celleration (faulty valve stem oil seals).

My 2004 audi A4 consumes oil at a rate of 1 1/2 quarts every 3 months. There are no apparent leaks and it is not burning it. It idles and runs smooth. Any suggestions?

How many miles/km's you drive in those 3 month's ? oil consumption is normal ! Check when you first start the engine in the morning wetter or not you see a puff of blue smoke, if you see smoke , your valve seals are leaking.
1 liter oil each 2000km is normal.

Excess oil consumption (1 qt/wk)

You must be careful with the 90s mitsubishis as the oil used is important. If you use the cheaper types they tend to make the engine smoke and use excessive amounts. Also manufacturer grade of oil to be used is also important.Have you taken the spark plugs out to see if they have signs of oil burning on them?
