if you have a leak from the back of the rack your sector shaft seal is defective. to replace it you need to remove the rack and do it on the bench.remove the locking nut and pull the seal from inside.if you are a rooky replace the rack with a rebuild one. good luck.

SOURCE: Must add power steering fluid every two days.

Hi

Yes you can replace the steering rack rubber boots OK.

But if you are loosing fluid, it sounds like the internal seals are leaking, allowing the fluid to fill up these boots, and subsequently bursting them, so you will be back to square one.

Better to fit an exchange steering rack !

Good luck !

A FixYa rating would be Nice !......... Thanks.....John.

loose belt or they didn't bleed all the air out of the system. check the level of the power steering fluid... now start the motor and turn the wheel all the way to the right till you go as far as you can... give it a few seconds like that... not shut off the motor... check the level of the fluid... top it up if you need to... now repeat that method again but to the left. that should bleed out the air

Robert

Please take a moment and rate this solution thanks

Delivery and return hoses both go to the filler tank and steering assembly you can trace them from the filler tank to the pump. held on with retaining clips

Power steering hose keeps breaking, even when replaced by high pressure hoses. Replacing rack and pinion does not help either.

A bad seal in the rack and pinion would have caused low pressure from fluid by-passing the seal. This also would have caused noticeably increased effort to steer the vehicle. Excessively high pressure would indicate an issue between the power steering pump and the rack, and since the hoses have been replaced I would focus on the pump. PS, find a real mechanic, not a parts changer.

Power steering hard

Hey Kumar,
Does the steering get easier when it gets hot? If it get easier when hot, its the rack and pinion gear. The valve body (actually a teflon composition ring(s) o-rings/valve bore housing are getting worn to the point where they are not controlling the fluid flow when its cold,, when the rack and pinion gets hot, the valve bore expands and "corrects" the clearance which in turn, controls the fluid flow. The valve body bore in the rack and pinion housing is worn where the teflon rings ride against the bore.
This is nothing that can be fixed except by replacing the entire rack and pinion gear. Drain ALL the power steering fluid from the pump also and fill with fresh new fluid.

You will need to remove whatever is in the way, and yes it is a bear of a job, you will also need to under the vehicle to complete the install.

Where is the power steering hose? on a 2001 pontiac montana

The power steering hose, goes down under the power steering pump,it goes directly down from the pump, and cuts under the engine to the rack and pinion, both hoses do.If this was helpful, please rate, thank you.

2004 nissan quest power steering leak

Determine where the leak is coming from. Is it the rack, a hose, a connection, the pump? Most common would be a hose connection. Under normal circumstances, the hoses would not yet be cracked on an '04. The rack also has posed some problems with this vehicle, especially if it has been frequently operated on dirt roads, or dusty, grimey conditions. If the problem is with the rack, you can get a rebuilt rack to install, yours is rebuildable, but if you are not versed in this, it may be better to leave the rebuilding to the experts...but first order of business, find the leak, then we can better deal with the problem.

Sounds like a bad steering rack & pinion assembly... is it only bad in one direction or both...?
If both then it's the rack assembly... Hope this helps...;-)

My 2006 nissan titan is on its third rack and pinion steering unit, what would be causing this to happen

consider power steering pump may have metal debris or sticking
valve, also power steering pressure hoses leak all the time, kinked lines or faulty manufactured hoses ( rubber blocks inside hose, but looks good outside)
