How to replace a starter for a 96 toyota 4runner, 4wd, 6cyl

  1. Connect the battery ammeter to the starter as shown in the illustration.

Fig. Fig. 4: Make the connections to the battery, ammeter and starter as shown here

  1. Check the rotation of the starter, it must be smooth and steady with the pinion gear moving outwards. Compare the ammeter reading to the starter specifications chart.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

See Figure 5
Replacing the starter while the engine is cold is recommended. A hot engine can result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the nut and disconnect the battery cable from the magnetic switch on the starter motor.
  3. Disconnect the remaining electrical connections at the starter.
  4. Remove the nuts and/or bolts securing the starter to the bell housing, then pull the starter toward the front of the vehicle to remove.

To install:
  1. Insert the starter into the bell housing being sure that the starter drive teeth are engaged with the flywheel teeth, not jammed against the flywheel.
  2. Tighten the attaching hardware to 29 ft. lbs. (39 Nm) and replace all electrical connections.

Fig. Fig. 5: Exploded view of a common starter mounting found on Toyota trucks

  1. Connect the positive battery cable (starter wire) to the starter.
  2. Connect the negative battery cable.

RELAY REPLACEMENT

See Figure 6
The starter relays on most of your Toyota trucks are located either in the relay block in the engine compartment or on the driver's side junction block. The cover for the relay compartments should be marked, "starter'' or the relay will have a part number with a suffix of 28300-XXXXX. Simply locate the relay, pull it out, and install a new one if needed.

How do you remove and replace a starter for a 1992 2.6L Isuzu Amigo?

1.The battery negative and more importantly positive cable must be disconnected.
2. There are 2 14mm bolts holding the starter in place, the upper bolt can be removed by leaning over into the engine compartment from under the hood with a socket and extension on a ratchet or a ratcheting wrench.
3. crawl under the front passenger wheel and remove the positive cable nut, remove positive cable from starter.
4. unclip the small ground wire attached to starter.
5. remove the lower starter bolt.
6. There is room on the bottom of the vehicle to wiggle the starter down to the floor and out from under the vehicle. There isn't enough room to get the starter out from the engine compartment up and out from under the hood.
7. installation of new starter is reverse of installation.

This procedure should work on any Isuzu Rodeo, Trooper, Amigo, or Honda Passport with a 2.6L 4 cylinder 4ZE1 engine

Chnage starter 2003

Generally you will need to disconnect the battery ground cable, look near the oil filter and remove wires from the starter. It should be in front of the motor at the bottom in the center extreme front near the radiator but down low in the engine compartment. Remove the bolts holding the starter after wires are disconnected and replace in the same order.

Starter removal

I have given the step wise instructions for how to remove the starter:

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal or the remote ground terminal.
2. Raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands.
3. Remove the engine protection cover from below the engine compartment.
4. Remove the air filter housing.
5. On vehicles equipped with automatic transaxles, remove the transmission control module (TCM) from its mounting and position it out of the way. Note: DO NOT disconnect the electirical connector from the TCM.
6. Remove the starter motor upper mounting bolt.
7. Clearly label and disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter motor solenoid.
8. While supporting the starter motor, remove the lower mounting bolt and withdraw the starter motor from the vehicle.

Installation is the reverse of removal.

Need a diagram to take a starter off.

You dont really need a diagram. Starter sits on the driver's side(LHD) of the engine towards the lower rear of the engine compartment.
Disconnect the ( - ) of the battery.
There are 2 wires on the starter, one lugged - can be pulled off, the other needs a 13mm(0.5 inch) wrench.
Then there are 2 bolts that hold the starter to the engine. (14 mm if I'm not mistaken) Unbolt and out it comes!
