Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima

4 Answers

Over heating My 2000 maxima SE overheats when the air conditioner is on. It will cool off slightly when the heat is turned on. If the car is operated with the air and heat turned off, it runs at normal temp. Any suggestions on what this might be?

I had the same issue with the car overheating going down the highway; however, at idle it would blow cold air. I replaced everything (therm., rad. hoses, water pump), then my uncle (certified tech.) told me (without even looking at the car) to replace the radiator. Yeah it sounds like it should be the only part left, but the explanation was at highway speeds your cars water has to run a different route through the radiator than when its idle. Even if you flush your radiator it will still do the same thing because you will only be flushing the coils that the water runs through at idle. So there is a clog in the one or more coils that the water runs through (restricting water flow) at highway speeds. When you turn your a/c on it creates more of a rush through the radiator and it can't do it because of the clog. Hope this helps

I have a 2000 with the exact same problem. It overheats when the air conditioner is turned on. I know it is not the compressor. The fans also come on when the air conditioner is on. Any suggestions of what this could be?

I had the same problem and took it into the shop. They said it was the air conditioning compressor. With over 200K, I chose not to fix. Don't know if it was accurate assessment.

My 1996 Nissan Maxima only overheats when on incline but I can turn the heat on & it cools down immediately.

Could be the radiator fan. Running the heater adds a second source of getting rid of heat in the coolant. Is the radiator fan running when it is hot ? Are you sure the cooling system is full ?

2004 chevy aveo when i turn ac on it runs hot and when i turn ac off it cools down

The AC puts allot of heat load on the engine so of course it will run hotter but not overheat the engine, if that happens you may have a clogged radiator.

Engine Cooling problem 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4 cyl

Although the 4 cylinder is too underpowered to have air conditioning in my opinion, it still shouldn't overheat within 10 minutes unless something is wrong. If your Jeep doesn' not overheat when you are driving WITHOUT AC on then your compressor might have a problem and causing the engine to work too hard to turn it.

But if it overheats without the AC on, then the first thing you need to do is check the cooling fan and see if it operates! There has been a lot of problems with the cooling fan relay on this model. If that isn't it, then move to changing the thermostat and checking the water pump.

Car is overheating, thermostat was changed and the radiator was flushed, car does not overheat while idoling, but when you start driving it overheats

It sounds like water pump may be your problem. It circulates a 50/50 mixture of glycol (or some form of) and water through the engine block and cylinder head and back through the radiator. In the radiator the mixture is cooled when air passes over the fins of the radiator. This is accomplished by driving or a mechanical/electrical fan when stationary. The water pump also circulates the mixture through the heater core giving the car heat. If the water pump is not circulating the water back to the radiator to cool, it will overheat. More heat is caused by the engine when driving (much less heat when idling), hence the overheating while driving.
I hope this helps and good luck!

My 2003 ford focus is over heating quickly especially when i am sitting at a light, then when i turn the air conditioner on it overheats more

1. Does the cooling fan turn on when it over heats?
2. Check your coolant level, if it is a little low it will cool normally under transit and over heat in the conditions you are describing. Also have your coolant check for proper dilution.
3. If your cooling fan is failing to turn on you may have a coolant temperature switch issue.

Overheating and no hot air from heater.

Leave rad cap off when starting from cold, turn heater(not defrost) on, and top up coolant in rad as you go, to about an inch or 2 from top of rad. Let engine run with cap off until your rad fan comes on & off 3 or 4 times. Every once in a while, rev engine slightly for 5-10 seconds to help bleed air out faster. After about 3 or 4th time fan comes on, you should be o.k. to put cap back on all the way & fill bottle to proper level. Heat should be there now. Give it a try & let me know how it goes.
