Question about 1997 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

1997 Ford Taurus 3.0 2v. Check engine light came on (did not change in the way the car drove) and Autozone diagnostic pointed to cam sensor, but the tech there was thinking crank sensor when he showed me where it was. So I unknowingly changed the crank sensor. It was on so tight that it broke while prying it off, so I replaced it and now the car won't start. I'm not getting any spark. I had also changed the spark plugs at the time I changed the crank sensor. I never got around to changing the cam sensor. I've tried two different new crank sensors from diff parts stores. Looking for ideas. Couldn't find any fused that looked bad. Thanks

GOT IT! The THIRD crank sensor fixed it. How did I know I needed to try a third new sensor? I had nothing else to try.

Try getting a crank sensor from ford also use sandpaper and clean the mounting area of the crank sensor screws, and check all your fuses it is possible that one might have popped while you were prying off sensor none are marked that is why you have to check them all. if you end up changing you cam sensor it is recommended you change the synchronizer gear under the sensor you can purchase both as a kit for about 5o dollars.because if you don't you will soon hear a loud squeal from the gear causing you to go back to that area again.

I've checked the fuse bank under the dash and the one under the hood. The cover has a diagram for what the fuses go to and I checked all that seemed pertinent.
I'll try a Ford sensor. The mounting surface looks clean, but I 'll hit it with some paper anyway.
I didn't have the battery ground disconnected before removing the crank sensor, so fuse was my first thought. Could anything else have been damaged, ie computer? I know that is what fuses are for. Any other fused I may not be looking at?

Changed the cam sensor. The magnet was broke and chopped to bits, but the top of the sycronizer looked ok.
Still not getting spark. This really sucks.

Check engine light came on, fault is for the Cam shaft position sensor. I changed the sensor. Didn't work. I changed the whole synchronizer assembly. Didn’t work. I checked the wiring, all good continuity...

OK, on a 1998 Ford Taurus have a service engine soon light. Scanning it said the Camshaft Sensor circuit was bad. So I replaced the camshaft sensor. Cleared the code and it came back.

In the winter time it comes, and in the summer time it goes away (or after a week or so of warm weather).

I think it's a wiring problem or a bad calibration of distance to the reluctor ring.

I think your problem on the 1997 Ford Thunderbird LX is the same thing.

Good luck on the repair.

I have a 1997 ford taurus 6 cylinder that has a ''misfire'' diagnostics reading. It says cylinder six. I have changed all the spark plugs and wires and reset the code, the check engine light came back on....

Vacuum lines will not cause a specific cyl misfire. You may have a bad coil pack, or bad injector. You will need to make sure you have spark at the specific cyl listed for the misfire, and can test to see if you have injector pulse using a noid lite. Also, and good scan tool can show you live data, and allow you to watch the components operation, and give you a good starting point to determine the miss.

Systems maintenance light came on; what shall I do now? I drove over an hour at @ 65 mi p hr to the train station no rain, then sat in the drizzly cold rain for over and hour with the car running, heat on;...

I assume you are saying you have a check engine light illuminated.

Most auto parts stores will read the OBD II code(s) for check engine lights at no charge. The codes they read will give you an idea of what the problem is.

1997 Ford Taurus Ghia

I am by no means a mechanic, but my car is in the same state at the moment. My car runs good and everything is working fine. The only way to find out what is wrong is to have it hooked up to a diagnostic machine. It costs about $100 dollars at the mechanic. Probrobly a sensor that may need to be replaced. Mine is a failure in the Cam sensor connection.
