Question about 2001 Ford Focus

1 Answer

I have a 2001 ford focus with a Zetec engine and an automatic transmission and it will start and idle but when you push the accelerator petal it falls on its face. If I pull on the kick down cable it will rev up. I changed the fuel pump and filter to get it running.

I cleaned the IAC like you suggested and it ran good for about 3 minutes then it started same problem.

  • gkuhn430 Nov 13, 2010

No check engine light or codes. Why will it rev up if you pull on the kick down cable but not the accelerator cable if it has a vacuum leak?

  • gkuhn430 Nov 13, 2010

I installed another IAC valve and it seems to be running better. I disconnected the Mass Air Flow sensor and the engine would stumble when reved. I reconnected the sensor and it seems to be running better. I will take it for a rode test after lunch and report back.

It made it 1 block then the problem was back. I do not think it is a vacuum leak.

  • gkuhn430 Nov 14, 2010

I have enough ability to figure out vacuum leaks and simple #$@%. I do not alot of test equipment and I do not work on cars for a living. I am a licensed A

Hi!!
Remove the IAC solenoid (on the Intake manifold) and using a piece of cloth wet with carb. cleaner wipe it clean, then wrap the cloth on a pencil or pen and clean the IAC housing specially the far end where the solenoid sits. DO NOT APPLY CARB CLEANER DIRECTLY TO THE IAC OR THE HOUSING.
Keep me posted!!

    Ok!!

With that out of the way, check air filter and vacuum hoses for cracks or loose connections. A vacuum leak will give you the same symptoms. Is the Check Engine light ON?

  • Rene J Solis Nov 13, 2010

Check for engine vacuum leaks- Check the condition of the PCV valve and lines- Check for excessive carbon buildup- Check for a restricted exhaust. Check base idle speed, check for low fuel pressure- Check the throttle linkage for sticking or binding

  • Rene J Solis Nov 13, 2010

Turn the key to off. Unplug the MAP sensor connection and restart the engine to recheck for the idle concern. If the condition is gone, replace the MAP sensor.

Working on a vehicles is not an easy job, and when the problem is related to engine performance call it fuel or electrical, were the PCM is involved, you also need a lot of patience and some specialized test equipment.

When we help someone to troubleshoot a fault, we start form the basic most common components and go from there. We know that computer sending components are expensive and that's why we recommend to have them tested before replacing them.

I would suggest to take the vehicle to a garage for diagnostic. Once you know what the problem is, we'll be happy to help you make the necessary repair.

    Good luck!!

I have the same car. So far no problems with the Transmision. I had the Trans oil change out every 60 K Sure sounds like you need to get the Transmision checked. Is the fault light on. I have invested ina fault code reader sure is worth it.
Good luck.  Vilmos
