Hi David & Debbie!

You are correct, the pump is in the gas tank.

Occassionally (very rarely), you might find an access hatch in the trunk floor, but don't count on it.

As this is an electric pump, you also need to check items like fuses and fuel pump relays, and an Auto Supply expert can help you with that. You can also determine whether the pump is running by removing the gas cap and putting an ear to the opening while someone switches the ignition key off and on. You should be able to hear faint electric motor noise if the pump is running.

To get to the pump, remove as much gas as possible from the tank (to lighten the load when the tank is loosened), locate the two metal straps that hold the tank up, and find the tightening nuts and bolts at the rear edge of the tank. Arrange some kind of support (preferably a floor jack) under the tank and loosen the strap bolts... the tank will lower. Once these bolts and straps are separated the tank can be lowered enough to give you access to the top and the fuel pump/gas gauge sending unit. There is a locking ring that must be loosened and this is done with a hammer and screwdriver or chisel, turning it counterclockwise. Remove the fuel lines and wiring (remembering what goes where) and then remove the pump assembly.

Reassembly is the above in reverse order.

Hope this is illuminating and helpful, don't hesitate to ask if you have further questions or comments, and please be so kind as to rate my assistance. Please let us know how it goes, and best of luck!

Thanks!

I have a 1989 iroc Camaro 5.7 multiport. just installed a new engine. ok car runs fine I dive it to work and that's about 25 miles. for got to say I also put a new fuel filter and fuel pump in. about 1/4...

If you replaced fuel pump, you should have checked orientation of float to make sure it doesn't hit a baffle or anything.
You can use resistors to see if fuel gage reacts properly to the resistors, 90 ohms is full
0 ohms is empty. The wire colors for sending unit are pink and black. Take connector loose, use resistor between proper terminals, key on. If the gage reacts properly, the problem is in the gas tank.
Use a gage, check proper fuel pressure, 34--47 psi.
As far as pressure in the gas tank, check evap system where applicable or vent tube.

How to instal fuel pump on 1987 camaro iroc?

This is a big job. You need to drop the fuel tank being that the pump is installed in the tank with the sending unit . You almost need to drop the rear axle assembly out of the car to remove the tank . My best suggestion would be buy a repair manual at your local parts store .. spend the 20 bucks or so for it and then read through the process of replacing the pump and see what tools you need to do the job . After reading throught the manual you will have a very good idea of what time it takes and what all needs to be remove to access the pump .

1985 iroc tpi 305 can the fuel pressure be adjusted! i bought it used and it runs good but backfires and the exaust smells badly of gas has a new o2 and map sensor on it.

If it is fuel injected, the fuel pressure regulator is most likely the problem,if it is carbureted the mc solenoid could be the problem,or carburetor needs rebuilding.

My gas guage is not accurate, the needle seems to jump around while driving. I ran out of gas at 1/4 tank the other day. What could the problem be on a 87 iroc z?

GasparMacari is 100% on target. I had the same problem with my IROC. Seems that the sulphur in the gas errodes the contacts on the gas gauge sensor in the fuel tank. I know of people that have tried gasoline additives to clean the corrosion but I would give it a 50/50 chance of working. You gotta drop the tank to get at the fuel pump/sensor assembly. You are looking at some big bucks and it is NOT a do-it-yourself project. One spark and BOOM no more Camaro... or YOU... I'd suggest setting or re-setting your odometer trip indicator every time you fill up. Keep track of the miles driven .vs your MPG and you can figure out when it is time to fill 'er up again. That's what I did until I traded it off.

Fuel pump is located in the fuel tank. A shop can do a fuel pressure pretty easy. You could do it to, you just have to spend 50 to buy a tester, or spend 20 to have a shop do it.

No power to fuel pump.

Don't forget to check for a good ground at the pump, I've seen this problem pay for a new fuel pump more than once.
