Lets clarify this. Does it die when you turn the defroster on and or A/C? Did you recently unhook the battery or you put in a new battery? Likely this is the problem.. Clean your throttle body with some carb cleaner (while your battery is disconnected). When finished, hook your battery back up and drive for about 5 miles or so to re-set the computer. You won't have that problem anymore. Must keep the throttle bodies clean in Envoys and Trailblazers.

Why is there a clicking noise under dash near heater?

Classic symptoms of your battery being disconnected for what ever reason. The clicking is your vent actuators that are now bad (happens on occasion when the battery is disconnected). The engines stalls when you turn your DEFROSTER on right, not necessarily the heater. You'll find the stalling when you turn your defroster on OR your A/C. To fix this problem, disconnect the battery again, and clean your throttle body, this will cost you only a can of Seafoam spray about $8 to fix. Hook the battery back up after clean, drive around with HVAC all on OFF!! The computer will relearn the newly cleaned TB and your stalling problem will go away. Fouled spark plugs are a seperate problem. Make sure you're running AC Delco 41-103 plugs. The I6 engine loves these.

Stalling when turn back on

all stalls end in CEL check engine light on. that is normal
but CEL glow. when engine running , means you had a failure, and it stored DTC error codes, so scan it.
lots of causes. huge list.
get a tune up , tops list.

SCAN it to be sure all sensors work. running.
all fuses in car good.
by stalls , i assume the engine stalls and engine RPM is 0 RPM.
the stall cause the whole dash to light up, all the warning lamps come
on (self test) oil , charge , CEL. come on.
what is important is the stall and the cause.

i will tell you the 3 ways.
lost electrical power to engine EFI system (seems not)
bad engine, (lost compression hot)?
bad spark , spark died.?
bad fueling, lost all fueling (starves and stalls or floods and misfires horribly and stalls (black spark plug tips are big time clue)

if non eof the rings a bell.?
get the car serviced.

this car is newer nicer car, you (we) can scan and drive and log data.
allowing faster easy diagnosis.

Would a bad oxygen sensor on my 1996 ford explorer cause my engine to die after driving it a distance?

no, the only way an O2 sensor might cause the engine to stall is if the heater shorted out with the power supply and every time we have seen that the engine will not run at all. if you have a stall hot check the idle control motor the year is right for a bad one.....HAVE FUN

I have a 2004 Ford Escape and just recently it started to stall out when I turn on my windshield wipers.

Does it do it only when you turn on the wipers, or will it also stall if you turn on the headlights or heater fan? I am asking because it is possible that the alternator is failing to produce enough electrical current so when you turn on additional high demand electrical devices in the vehicle there is not enough battery power available to operate the fuel pump or engine computer properly causing the engine to stall out.

Engine Light On

If you notice idle getting too low, or car stalling on turns, or when AC /heater is on etc, (engine under load) then yes, probably IAC motor is defective, or dirt in the seat area of it. Only thing to be aware of, is it might stall when off the gas, so be careful when turning, and/or stopping. Have it looked at first chance, but it shouldn't hurt vehicle, just be cautious driving when you let off the gas, it could stall.

Car won't idle sometimes and dies when i come to a stop. no check engine or service engine lights come on either. doesn't do it all the time though.

The idle is controlled by the idle air control valve, an electronic valve fitted on the inlet side of the engine, they get sticky and cause the car to stall. Sometimes they can be leaned and lubricated but in most cases a replacement is required.
To prove it is this valve, with the engine idling start turning on as much as possible, lights, stereo, heater, aircon on full blast etc.. the car should pick up on revs as these things are activated but your car will probably stall due to the valve sticking.

2004 Envoy xl stalls when making turns

this is caused by slow engine idle speed, do the procedure below.
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
