W/1# cylender on TDC and left cam shaft on timing mark should the roter be pointed exactly at the 1# plug lead?

take no 1 plug out and watch the rockers for no 1 piston when the rockers are both on the back of the cam , ( valve clearance ) place a piece of wire in the plug hole to touch the top of the piston and as you carefully move the piston towards tdc the wire will move out until you get to a point where it starts to move back in
At the point where the wire moves out or in as you rock the crank at that point the TDC marks should be lining up
That is tdc no1 piston firing
also look at the other rockers and see which one is moving up (exhaust) and the other down (inlet) and that is the next piston to fire

With #1 at TDC, cam is normally set in valve overlap position, but what is important is that distributor is in firing position for #1 as well.

It appears that you are out in the firing order by 1 plug position in the cap.. I would pull the distributor and place the engine timing mark exactly where I wanted it on compression stroke. turn the distributor shaft until the rotor button was pointing to no 1 cylinder plug lead and refit it there. You may have to turn the shaft back a bit to allow for the turn of the gear as you put it in but ensure that the rotor button points directly to no 1 plug lead contact in the cap. Nip up the adjuster --fix the timing light and check the timing . There may be a slight adjustment to do to get it right.

Timing chain marks needed for Audi A4 B9 1.8tfsi 2009 model. Engine was taken out and settings not marked. This is extremelyurgent. Please help

diagrams I have show a twin cam set up with 2 balancing shafts. The marks on the cam shaft point to (left cam shaft 11 oclock the mark on the right point to the 1 oclock position. The chain will have 3 black links-- the top black links will be at the timing marks on the shafts with the 3rd black link directly at 6 oclock facing a mark on the gear. The balancer marks both point to the 1 oclock position with black links on each and the 3rd black link will be facing a mark to the 7 oclock position on the crankahaft gear. Everything is done with the piston at TDC no 1 cylinder so get it there before you put the cam shafts in position or you will bend valves. Crank shaft gear is not keyed to the crank shaft. there are dots on the right hand balancer shaft gears and these dots will be as the 2 dots on adjacent teeth either side of a dot on the meshing gear. I suppose that is all as clear as mud but if you got this far then you will see the marks and marked links on the chains

  • No 1 piston at TDC on the firing stroke.
  • crankshaft pulley notch in line with TDC mark on timing covet
  • cam shaft pully notch in line with mark on head
If it has dizzy then No1 at tdc will have rotoe pointing on number 1 lead.
if has Igniters then line notches on cam to notches on head

You don't say what car or how many cylinders, so lets try a generic fix. With the tappet cover off, turn the engine until the valves on #1 cylinder rock. At this point the timing mark on your pulley should line up with the timing mark on the casing, if they do not your cam timing is out. Note that when these marks line up, your distributor should be pointing 180 deg. from the #1 plug lead position. You need to turn the crankshaft 360 deg. to get #1 TDC.

You must find the cam lock bar and crank lock pin to do this job properly, otherwise you can bend some valves and that becomes expensive..the front crank damper has a mark to line up with a mark on the timing cover for #1 TDC, but the cam lock bar is what aligns the cams into position. The crank lock pin is helpful but not 100% necessary...

twin cam or single? if it's single the cam gear has a notch on it it poits to top bottom crank points to 0 mark the #1 piston at TDC distributor pointing to #1 on cap and your set.

1991 mazda b2200- timing belt changed

The keyway and or the dot on the crank should be line at 12 oclock. You will see a point on the oil pump housing to go by. On the camshaft the pointer will be at 12 oclock also. Use the O on the camshaft to the top at mark. Be sure to look at the dist. roter to make sure that it is pointing at the #1 spark plug wire. I could get 180 out of time. If you do it right it should start up right away. then you can use a timing light to finish it.
