Some transmissions have a limp home mode which locks the transmission into a low gear to get them to a garage or home if home is not too far away.
You may find that there is a fault in your transmission, if there is you should take it to an auto trans workshop and have it checked

Why does my 1995 jeep cherokee not want to drive allof a sudden, it is as if the transmission is out

you get in car, you start engine, it runs normal , hear it?
then look at tachmeter, it shows say 1200 rpm cold
you shift in to Drive, L or 2 or Reverse and the car fails
to move in all gears the Tranny is bad or the shifter brain
called the TCM.
did you check fluid levels on the tranny yet, per the operators guide?

Change the coolant sensor, they are faily cheap and usually easy to get to. They are also prone to failure on the early years of fuel injection.

I have a 1989 jeep wrangler. yesterday, after the stick shift felt stiff to shift, the clutch felt suddenly loose. Today, the stick shift stopped moving completely while i was driving. Finally, I was able...

Sounds like you are having a clutch problem. The sudden looseness in the clutch pedal indicates a problem with either the hydralic system, (slave or master or line) leaking or clutch pressure plate going out. Check your clutch fluid resevoir first, if low look for a leak under the vehicle, have a friend push the clutch and get underneath to find leak.

Reverse died, engine HOT, drive lurches

I would have to say that your transmission failed. The Tranmission was trying to lock up and the engine was being forced to labor extra hard and that is what more than likely created the extra heat.

Idle RPM

the idle on most firebirds are set from the factory and are not adjustable but you could look on the sticker on the bottom side of the hood or above the radiator. the emission control or the drive belt routing sticker should have it on there. hope this helps you... god bless
