There are thousands of codes that can turn that light on. Auto Zone can pull the code from your computer for free. There is no way to tell why that light is on without that code.

You need a workshop manual to do the job properly. There are different items to service depending on the mileage - for example, a small service would usually entail cleaning the air filter and checking the fluid levels - engine oil, radiator water, brake and clutch fluid etc. Then check the tyres for wear and make sure all lights work OK.
A medium service would be to clean the air filter, or fit new one depending on driving conditions - you need to change this filter more often in dusty conditions.
Also, drain engine oil and refill and change spark plugs. Check plug wiring for cracks or breaks and do all in minor (small) service.
A major service would include all the above, but you now need to change the oil filter, fuel filter and the air filter, if necessary (oil and fuel filters are necessary).
Also, remove wheels and check condition of brake linings, check tyres for wear caused by misalignment and check play on wheel bearings.
These checks are not specific to your vehicle, and is just an overall guide. Your workshop manual may specify other areas. If in doubt, see your dealer, they have all the experts on hand.

MY 1997 CHEVY LUMINA;S CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON AND KEEPS READING A CODE OF RANDOM MISFIRE WHEN THEY CHECK IT ON THE MACHINE.IT WILL NOT STAY CRANKED AND HAS A BAD SHAKE TO IT WHEN IT IS CRANKED LIKE AIR...

I would first get a tune up on It. You know change the spark plugs, spark plug wires, oil, oil filter, air filter and also change the fuel filter and see if that helps.

Engine light stays on changed plugs and wires did oil and filter did air cleaner and gas filter

You need to have the computer scanned to see why the check engine light is on. Once you have the trouble code(s) you can than start researching ways to resolve them.

The check engine light comes on because it sees a fault with either a computer controlled device, and input sensor, or a monitored system. It has nothing to do with the oil or filters.

Check engine light air Fuel mixture

When it comes on again let a regular shop scan it for you with a good scanner so they can see whats going on. a generic code reader wont do it. if it is stored in memory they can still check it. if the truck runs good idles fine just watch out for anything out of the norm , what about air filter and fuel filter have they been changed ? tune up ? air filters should be changed every 2 to 3 oil changes and fuel filter every 30k depending on fuel quality there. and tune up at 60 to 70 k even though they probaly said 100k.
