Thank you for this help. Just one thing, when it does cut off, it will start right back up, just have to feather the throttle pedal. Could the float still be the problem?

Hello Frogly.
There may be several issues involved here but because it is intermittent the first thing I would look into would be a sticking EGR Valve.
If the pintle in the valve sticks open it will give you the symptoms you describe.

Apply a vacuum to the valve and observe if it sticks or binds.
A replacement valve should be available at Toyota or an aftermarket supplier.
I hope this helps you repair your problem.
Thank You for using FixYa.

This is not too uncommon with older carburettors. The problem is going to be held inside the carb.. The float is more than likely sticking and may need to be replaced. What happens is, the float sticks and allows the the needle, which shuts off the fuel when the float raises to the a specified level, to allow too much fuel to enter the carb. and fload the cylinders. I would bet it takes a few cranks after it dies to start and then smokes for a few seconds. These are really good and strong engines. I would advise, either if you have another car or a good friend who may do this kind of work, get a carb. kit and a float (sold seperately) and pay attention to the diagram enclosed in the kit. This should eliminate the issue altogether. Very simple and just takes a little time. Take due care in removing the vacuum hoses. Be sure to mark where each one goes and if any are questionable or cracked, replace it. New vacuum hoses can be bought in length at around $1.50 a foot. Very cheap and will prevent a future vacuum leaks and headaches. If you have any further questions or need help installing the rebuild kit, feel free to email me at iambanshee74@yahoo.com .

Yeah, by feathering the throttle, you are opening the butterfly valve to allow more air to balance out the fuel to air ratio. by putting in a kit, you are making sure that the insides are clean and in proper working order. Things wear and get old. The repair here, takes a little time but at $40 - $60 for the kit, it sure beats $400 - $600 for a new carburettor, lol.

Got my alternator replaced on my 1983 toyota celica shortly after it stopped switching into fourth gear

a very old car, this is.
and is an A/T right.
it stopped , implies to me an A/t not stick
so my A.T has shifting issues.
buy the FSM and read the page there on 4th gear issues and test.
or login to alldata.com and read the same page
or at mitchells.
A/T is a complex device, DIY working any A/T book free is not going to go well , at all. get the book

the real FSM has a section called on CAR A/T tests.

82 22-R toyota truck automatic runs fine idles fine then for no reason will not idle when stopped. I have to give it gas to keep running but runs rough. New plugs, dist. cap, wires, & rotory button....

I would suggest also replacing all O2 sensors, PCV valve, air filter, fuel filter.. Just might clear it up.. Not expensive and if issue continues - you will have ruled all that out as a cause..

Have a nice day !

Car battery

You have a very common problem. You have lost the "base idle" paramater, by changing the battery. What you need to do is drive the car thru several "drive cylces". Drive it in stop & go traffic, stop & let it idle for 2 minutes...then get an the expressway, engage passing gear several times. Pull off somewhere safe, let it idle, and duplicate the cycle again. This will teach the ECU the base idle, and you problem will vanish. We do this every day, for the same issue. Common problem, easy fix.

Check the condition of the coolant.
If you have any indication of oil, the headgasket could be bad.

1999 Toyota Camry Idle Problems on Hot days

Clean the IAC. Disconnect throttle body air hose and you will see a hole on the bottom of the throttle body just before the butterfly valve. Spray throttle body cleaner down the IAC hole and then let it soak about 1/2 hour. Reconnect hose and run engine about a minute and then repeat this process 2 or more times. Toyota engines from 1997-2005 commonly have the IAC get cruded up with carbon as early as 35,000 miles. This is a sImple and cheap repair that many repair shops don't want you to know.
