How to replace the computer in my 2005 chevy Tahoe

Dear Sylvia,
Of course you can replace the computer, but remember, if you have not fixed the problem to cause these symptoms, you may find the new computer will not work either.
You need to be absolutely sure the computer is the problem.
It would take many pages of this web site to tell you how to replace the computer, so it will be just as easy for you to go to a library or a car parts store, and get a repair manual and follow those instructions.
Libraries check out such book, you need not buy them.
Some name brands are : "Chilton's", "Motor's", and "Haynes".
All are make and model specific.
God bless your efforts.

Automotive Computer Modules - general knowledge

The automotive onboard computer modules is a very complex device that is programmed to control and monitor specific aspects of a specific automobile. The ECM is the most referred to but it is not the only onboard. For example the 2014 Lincoln MX has 39 (and this car these modules all collaborate with each other the control the operation of the car and they do so wireless. Consider this when contemplating working or replacing one.
1. You may think it is the ECM, but it could be one of the modules giving the ECM false data. Alright - which one do you replace or fix. Unless you have had the problem specifically diagnosed that it is a specific module that has failed or is ailing (short of a module having been physically damaged, you won't know.
2. If you go out an acquire another module it is going to be flashed (clear it and reload a new set of program instructions). (the module is costly to acquire - even from a wrecker)
3. In order to flash the module you first need the "program Instructions" from the manufacturer. (usually their database and you need access to that - that is costly.
4. Then you need the computer gear from the manufacturer - to hook up to the car in order to carry out the flash. (another costly item)
5. You are far better spending your money at the dealer or a shop with the correct equipment.Spend the couple hundred bucks and send it to either a dealer, a shop that has the equipment, or a mobile service company that specializes in flashing modules. (you need to flash the one that is failing or failed or the newly acquired one)

In lost my key and need to get a new key made

Mamita, you will need to either go to a Ford dealer, or a locksmith for a new key. You can have a passkey made at your local hardware store, but that will only provide access to the vehicle. Your Ford has a computer chip in the key to keep criminals from stealing your vehicle, which is why you will need a specific key made for your vehicle.

You dont need a computer. You need a new Body Control Module. Located under the center console but forward towards the dash. A very common problem with these cars. NOT A USED ONE....A NEW ONE. They are VIN specific.

My GMC Sierra turns over but will not crank, I've put a new distributor cap on, and a coil, still will not crank. Do this truck have a computer?

yes, it has a computer and the crankshaft sensor is a possible cause, but I recommend you do some standard troubleshooting before thinking about the computer--check for spark and fuel, etc.

Please see my tip at . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

Dodge PCMs are vin specific. If you put one in from another vehicle with the same basic options it may run. It will probably malfunction. Another wonderful innovation from chrysler.

New PCM + Programming is $500-$700.

Have you tried unhooking the negative battery cable for about 30 seconds and letting the computer reset itself.
