To check the switch, first observe if the button moves in and out when the pedal is pushed. If the button doesn't come out, the switch probably has a broken spring. If the button comes out OK, remove the connector and connect the terminals in the connector with a big paper clip. If this turns the brake lights on, replace the switch.
If neither of these works, the problem is likely with the relay. Try swapping the relay )usually in the engine compartment relay box and marked STOP or STOP LTS) with another similar relay (horn relay is a good choice).
If none of this works, please get back to me.

Did you check the fuses with a test light? A fuse can look OK, but unless you test continuity or use a test light, you could be mislead.

I have no brake lights and the fuse looks okay and the fuse for the brake light switch looks okay, too. What next?

Most likely the wire to the brake light switch or the switch itself is bad. This is a very common problem for these vehicles.

Good luck

Where is the brake relay on a 2000 tahoe

No relay in the wiring diagram. There is a 20amp hazard fuse and a 10amp vehicle stop fuse in the engine compartment fuse box.
If those fuses are good, and the brake light switch checks out ok, I would look at the turn signal switch next.

No brake lights i have turn signals and headlights and backing up lights but no center brake lights and no brighter left and no brighter right brake light. again all my lights work except when i hit the...

This is most likely to be your brake switch near your foot pedal then. They can come lose, or just break completely, rare, but it happens.
Get down on the floor and check up behind your brake pedal, it should look fairly obvious where it is then.
Good luck with it.

1998 chevey malibu 6 cyl---none of the brake lights work. i have changed stop lamp fuse in dash fuse box and the long brake light switch in front of brake pedal. any suggestions what to try next

have you checked the bulbs?. my next step would be to test for power at the brake light switch and then step on the pedal and see if power flows through on to the other side of connector, if it does then we know theres power and switch is working good, my next move would be to step on the pedal and have someone watch the brake lights and then with pedal pushed turn 4way flasher on and off and see if the lights lite up for brakes and then wiggle the signal light lever and see if the lights come on, if the brake lights come on when any of these steps are done then you have a bad signal switch, if this does nothing then i would look under the dash and locate the harness wiring from signal switch to it junction, this will be a block of wires held together with a center bolt, wiggle wires while on the brake, i have seen the power wire for the brake lights burn inside connecter, and last would be to check the wiring going to lights inside the truck, good day, hope this helps.

Rear lights all work with the exception of the brake lights on either side, changed bulbs and checked fuses but brake lights still do not work

look above the brake petal for a switch that is attached to the petal linkage-it is either unplugged or hung up/misaligned.

2003 Impala Brake lights dont work

The brake lights are routed through the signal light switch.
Looks like that will be the next switch to replace and the problem.
