How to replace the water pump in my '99 Volvo S80non turbo engine?


You take the timing belt cover off (10 mm bolt and two side clips after the top cover is removed) and the water pump is just under the left cam sprocket. Your best shot is to do a complete timing belt kit (the water pump comes with the kit).

We had to replace the powersteering pump and serpentine belt on 01 volvo s80. The timing belt is a lil warn but funtional and timing is set. The car will still not start. What else should we check.


Changing a belt and pump should not cause a no start situation unless there was something unplugged/disconnected during install that wasn't hooked back up. You need to determine whether there is spark and fuel present. Remove a spark plug wire/coil and crank engine. You should see/hear a spark from the coil/plugwire if spark ok. You then must check for fuel pressure from the test port on the fuel rail ( if equipped ) to determine fuel supply. Diagnostics will then have to be conducted on what is missing

We have a 2004 S80, the check engine light came


you need a technician with a diagnostic tool.. The thing about these cars is every time you do something you need to reset the counter on the cars computer.. This can only be done with a diagnostic tool

I wouldn't try it if you don't know how, (specially if this is what is known as an interference engine). Valve timing is *very* delicate and stray pistons love to chew them up!

Your problem is something like either a hose clip loose /biting into a hose and split it/a metal hose rusted and has a pin hole or a welsh plug (core plug) leaking. or a water plate gasket IE W/Pump/Manifold etc
Because it drips of the centre of engine dosenot mean it coming from the bottom of engine...

if this helps.. I had the 1998 model S70. the water pump was driven by the timing belt. you had to take the timing belt off just to replace the water pump. it was just a simple bolt on replacement. the only difficult issue is resetting the hydraulic tensioner on the timing belt. the hydraulic tensioner has to be completely taken off and compressed VERY SLOWLY in a vise. then insert a very hard drill bit or (special volvo tool) into a keeper hole, reinstall hydraulic tensioner onto car and reinstall timing belt.very quickly remove drill bit from keeper hole in tensioner and the tensioner snaps back out to put tension on belt. and you are done.

just put a compression gauge on each cylinder that will let you know if engine has a bent valve, gauges are relatively cheap. if the belt didn't have anything to do with your timing belt i doubt you have a bent valve, any check engine light? do you have spark? fuel pump turning on when key is turned to on position?
