Question about 1997 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

I have a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. Just put in a new battery, worked great. All of a sudden car wont start. before it stopped working the car would take a few cranks to start or might not start at all for a period of time. for this reason i think it is the starter myself. the theft system light stays lit. my dad who also drives the car thinks the light wasnt always lit. for that reason he thinks its the theft system acting up. ive read other posts saying to put the key in the on position for a certain amoutn of time. they say that wil reset the system. im tryin that right now but any advice would help. im having my doubts though and think it may be a starter because of the times it would take a while to start... any advice?

was it cranking at anytime? if you think it may be the starter they are easy to remove should only take an hour maybe and you can take it to any auto parts store and they will test it for you. Do you hear any kind of clicking or anything when you turn the key? are all the lights on the car and everything coming on like normal?

  • redhotchi485 Nov 12, 2010

it was cranking at certain times when it first started giving me trouble. by trouble i mean taking more than one turn to try and start. the lights are all working normal, the only sound i hear when i try to turn the car on is a soft electric noise. i read somewhere else online that sound had something to do with teh fuel, i dunno if youll knwo what im talkin about since im not explaining it the greatest.

but now all it does it turn on the lights and doesnt crank. ive tried doing the reset and it doesnt work. im scared to take off the starter cause this car seems to have more problems pop up when you take soemthign off of it

I understand the starting problems do sound fuel related. its hard to say if the starter is bad tho without bein there but seems to have some electircal problem you may just have to take it too a shop and get them to look at it. like a said these problems are hard to fix when i cannot be there to troubleshoot it for myself. My professinal opinion is that its not the starter tho but without bein there i cant really be sure. sorry again i could not be any real help to you

parsims2, i took out the starter and had it tested at autozone and oreillys. both places passed the test. when i reinstalled the starter the car turned on twice, and now im back to teh same problem...any further idea?

I got a used starter and had it tested before i had it installed in my 1997 sunfire and its working great when it was on the tester then i installed the starter in the car i tryed it and all it does is...

if the car is a stick and it stops right away when u push it, theres a chance that the engine might have seized up. I would take a socket and rachet put it on the harmonic balancer on bottom of engine and see if you can turn that engine over by hand, Its worth a try.

Ok. my car 97 pontiac sunfire needed a new alternator output cable. guy put a new one on but apparently messed with something else and now its not starting. said the theft light came on and that it isnt...

Tell the guy to call the dealer and ask them how to override the anti theft system or reset it. when you disconnect the battery and lose power it kicks on the anti theft device and it won't get fire.

I have a 1997 pontiac sunfirebird car and it will not start. the battery has been replaced and so has the starter. can you help me?

It is probably the Passlock sysem, Put the key in the ignition in the off position for about 10 minutes and then try and start it. If it still will not work, take it to the mechanic, It may need to be replaced like mine did.

Hope this Helps.
