Question about 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

I changed the alternator and had the battery tested (ok) in my 1992 mercury grand marquis. It is obvious the old alternator was bad, but the car is still not charging.

Check for a alternator fuse in the fuse box in the engeine compartment

Posted on Nov 12, 2010

Testimonial: "TY very much. I did find the fuse before you posted, but you diagnosis is right on."

  • jamie_harlan Nov 14, 2010

I actually found the fuse by tracing the wires from the alternator to the fuse box. The voltage regulator on the alternator was not working. I determined this by disconnecting the harness at the alternator, and read the voltage at the battery. There was no change. It was holding at 12.1. I found the fuse in the fuse box. It is a 30 amp. TY so much for responding.

You cannot reprogram the computer. You have to replace it. Load test the alternator. If a diode is bad it will charge the battery at a slower rate but will still light the battery warning light.

1998 Mercury Marquis: Battery indicator light blinks in random, unpredictable ways (not all the time), even though battery is good. Could the sensor be old and unreliable? Or would you trust sensor and...

The light comes on when the alternator voltage/current is low or if there is a short that is draining the battery. If it's blinking, the voltage is probably near the lower limit of acceptable voltage. Recommend checking voltage at the battery with car running. Should be at least 14 volts. If you don't have a voltmeter, take the alternator off and have it tested at the parts store. Let us know if you have more questions.

The car has power but the starter Solenoid Switch just clicks

First, make sure the engine is not seized by turning the crank with a 19mm socket and breaker bar. If it turns, then it's either a bad battery or starter. Is the battery more than 4 years old? Replace it. Then try getting under there and giving the starter a whack with a hammer a few times while someone is turning the key. If it starts, replave the starter.
