Question about 2002 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I am having a problem with antifreeze smell and leak. I can't see where the leak is coming from but I do see spots on the ground. It does not over heat but it does have a sent of pancake syrup once heated. I have brought it to a place and was given all sorts of possible causes, however I was just informed it could be a hose leak since it doesn't lose great amounts of fluid and only smells once the car has been running. I am in search of where the hoses might be to try and change it myself. Any input would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance

LEAK COULD BE COMING FROM RADIATOR.WHEN YOU FIRST START VECHICLE UP IN MORNING LET ENGINE IDLE TO GET UNTIL THERMOSTAT OPEN AND COOLANT PRESSURE BUILD UP. TURN ENGINE.OFF. RAISE HOOD YOU WILL SEE LEAK. THE COOLANT PRESSURE WILL PUSH OUT ANTIFREEZE.LOOK FOR LEAKS AROUND TOP RADIATOR HOSE AND LOWER RADIATOR HOSE.LOOK ON SIDES RADIATOR AND LOOK BELOW RADIATOR AREA WHERE COOLANTS FANS LOCATED RADIATOR CORES WILL LEAK AND LOOK AROUND WATER PUMP + BYPASS HOSE + CHECK HEATER HOSES TO HEATER CORE THAT GOES THROUGH BACK LOWER FIRE WALL.

Smell antifreeze inside car

If you don't see any antifreeze leaking in the engine compartment (especially around the radiator) you could have a leaking heater core. Does the smell go away if you turn off your heater for a while? If so, that's likely where your leak is.

Water leak at driver side wall at computer mounting plate (bottom).

if your not smelling antifreeze from your heatercore you probably just have a bad seal somewhere outside of your vehicle allowing rain or condensation to seap in and collect there. if you smell antifreeze from your heater vent it would more than likely be a leak in your heatercore running down seams in your dashboard collecting in that spot.

The heater stopped working, we can sometimes smell antifreeze and today there was like a green mist on the wind shield.

Its now dought you need a new heater core its leaking. Thats why you can smell antifreeze and also where the mist on the windsheild is coming from there must be a wet spot on the floor on the middle to the passangers side aswell good luck

I smell antifreeze, found no leaks, vehicle is not running hot

Its the heater core you smell it on the inside because the fan is blowing it into the vehicle antifreeze is unuswal stuff it forms a mist and becomes air borne even a small leak you will smell with the fan running look for wet spots on the carpet under the core but the mist may be so fine and you wonn;t feel it but this your problem

We have a 2003 gmc Envoy V6 4X4 Automatic has 108000 miles on it i see that the hose was replaced going to the radiator we smell antifreese under the hood and having to put anti freeze in the over flow...

Well, the fluid from the radiator could be evaporating. Is the upper hose solid when you shut it off?

If you 'smell' antifreeze there 'is' a leak.

Is the fluid 50/50 strength antifreeze to water?

Usually, if there is a leak, it will drip to the ground or come out of the tailpipe (in the case of a bad head gasket).

It is not unusual to have a car with 108,000 mi. to have a leak somewhere.

Keep looking and topping off the fluid.

I found little spots of antifreeze on the ground and i chesked the resivour when it was hot and everything looked fine and then i didnt see the spots again what to worry about?

Maybe the coolant reservoir was overfilled, and when the engine got hot, it just overflowed the excess antifreeze. If this is the case, then nothing to worry about. Make sure that the car doesnt have a tendency to overheat, because in that case, the water pump is starting to go bad, and they have a small relief hole, and leak small amounts of antifreeze. If you find a leak again, try to trace where it comes from, by looking at the position on the floor.

Antifreeze smell in cab, blows warm air not hot

It sounds like you have a leaking heater core. Look for a wet spot on the carpet. There is a slight chance the smell is coming from inside the engine compartment. There could be a small leak from a hose in the engine compartment.

1999 Gr Jeep Cherokee-antifreeze issue

how often does the warning comes on doing the week or in two weeks? if it was a one time thing or this takes place every 3-5 months i wouldn't worry about it. i will make sure that the radiator cap is on tight. you said that all hose seem to be in good condition i would check the radiator where the cooling fan covers the fins and the water pump because it has a warn hole at the base that will seep out antifreeze when the inside seals are going bad these will cause the smell also.
