Question about 1999 Mercury Sable

1 Answer

I need to know where the starter is located on a 1999 Mercury Sable. I'm told I can "bang" on it with a hammer to get it to start long enough to drive it to a mechanic. New battery last weekend, has power, just "clicks" when the key is turned. Thinking starter or starter solenoid... please help. Need to bring it to dealership tomorrow morning, and I need to know where the starter is so I can try to "bang" on it, unless someone has better advice...

The starter location is as follows:--- The starter is an electrical motor that provides a jolt of energy to ignite sparks needed to crank an engine.

  • First unplug the negative cable of your car battery for safety reasons.
  • Then remove the 10 bolts underneath the front of the vehicle to remove the splash guard. There are five bolts in the front, three in the center and two on each side.
  • Remove the electrical connectors attached to the starter motor. They are connected by tabs and can be easily removed with your hands.
  • You can use the socket wrench to remove the bolts to loosen starter motor. The starter motor will slip right off as the screws are removed.
This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

1999 sable heat / air or fan will not come on. days later it may come on while you are driving and stay working for a long time, but then it will not come on again for days.

Hello Bettvet.

This is a common issue with the Sable/Taurus line of cars.
It is usually the blower motor that has worn out the brushes on the armature.
The blower is mounted in the heater case above where the passengers feet would be.
You will need to remove a panel at the bottom of the dash to see it.
To verify this problem, when it isn't working, locate the motor and give it a couple of taps with a very small hammer or the handle of a screwdriver. If it starts to work, replace the motor. You have just shaken the brushes enough to make contact again.
If you need further advise concerning this, let me know here.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Where is the starter located in the engine?

Your motor is probably the 3.0 litre V-6...You can trace the battery cables to find the starter...the black cable is connected to the motor as a ground...the red cable is connected to the starter...you need to raise the front end of your Sable to completely see, and be able to change the starter as necessary...remember to disconnect either battery terminal any time you service the starter...Hope this helps. You can also use a hammer to tap on the starter in an attempt to loosen it for one start only:)

My 1999 sable overheated and I was told that the fuel pump needs reset to get it running. where do I did it?

For a while Ford put a reset switch /cutoff switch in the glove compartment. You can check for it there. Otherwise you may need to get a book on your vehicle at the local autoparts store to locate the switch.

Describe your 1999 Mercury Sable1999 Mercury Sable station wagon will occasionally not start after running it for a while. Seems to happen more when the weather is warm. Starter seems fine, just feels like...

next time this happens, listn vry caefully at the fuel tank while you or someone turns the key to "ON". Listn or the fuel pump to run for 5 seconds and shut off. If it does not do this, your fuel pump is not activating.
I suspect the fuel pump is going bad, if you bang on tank bottom, it may start up again. Th pump is sticking due to contamination or the armature is stopping at a bad spot.

Rear speakers 1999 mercury sable

To remove the rear speakers you will need to remove the plastic covers that are behind the seats. The screws are located in the trunk. I believe there are 8 of them, but don't quote me on that.

Once that plastic is removed, the screws holding down the speakers will be clearly visable.
