Hello
The steering gear identification tag is in the steering gear itself under the car, you may need to wash off the steering gear if it is covered by road grim, the tag will be a foil sticker most likely or a metal tag, you will need to raise the car off the ground and get under it to see the tag, remember always use safety jack stands, there are two choices here
Here are those choices:
The 1st one is the most common used
1. ACDELCO Part # 369059 {#26079911} replaces 26049251
GEAR KIT,STRG(REMAN) With Variable Power Steering.

2. ACDELCO Part # 369058 {#26079912} replaces 26031079
GEAR KIT,STRG (REMAN) Without Variable Power Steering

You asked for the steering gear tag, and there is one that ID's the gear type (Variable or non Variable), so the infiormation I provided was what you asked for.

Replace steering rack on 2004 grand prix

Jim, this is not a hard job but you must do it right. I suggest you purchase the Chilton Manual for your car. Before you take it apart mark the location of the outer tie rod ends so you can have the toe-in at least close when you reassemble. You might want to replace the outer tie rod ends at the same time. If i am buying a rebuilt unit i always try to get a "A-1 Cardone complete unit" with the inner tire rod ends already factory installed.

Go to the local small repair shop

My uncle replaced the power steering pump in my 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix but I am still having a whining noise. What is the proper way to bleed the pump of air for a Grand Prix?

the power steering pump, you need to bleed out the rack, this is done by filling the power steering system then turning the wheel from left to right in quick repitions.

My 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP has a power steering leak but seems to work well. my mechanic wants to replace the whole rack and pinion, but that seems extensive for a leak. any suggestions?

Anytime a power steering compononent is leaking it requires replacement. whether or not you choose to replace it is up to you. if you lose all power steering fluid you will lose your power assist however mechanical steering ability is still maintained.
