Can you heer the fuel pump come on when you turn the key to the run position not actually cranking it just turning the key to the run position? Do you have a fuel pressure guage available? I would suspect a fuel pump issue with the information you have provided. One thing you can try is spraying an alternative fuel into the throttle body, throttle body cleaner or induction cleaner too see if it will start. If it does start and run briefly and dies suspect a fuel delivery issue. At this point we would need to determine if it is electrical or if the fuel pump is failing.

If you pull the cover off that has the spark plugs boot does the plastic cover inside appear to have black tracking marks on it.This is the coil cover and have been known to misfire badly using leaving black track marks.

This is what get the black track marks on the outside.

The very top of the plastic by where the spark plug boots attach in the top of the picture is where arcing occurs.

Check pullies, all of them should turn freely, loosen the belt and see how it turns over, a/c can lock the engine and not let it turn at all, check fuel pressure. let me know. does it act like it backfires?

Try this when you try to start it. Pull off the air iducton to the throttle body. have some one crank it over, put your hand over the throttle opening and check for suction. there should be a considerable amount, also there shouldn't be any air trying to blow your hand back. if there is little suction or blow back it is caused by exhaust restriction. most likely the catalitic converter . And you need to check the timing belt. you can get to the top of it from the top cover, either 4 or 6 cylinder. there are 4 bolts that you have to remove and then you can pull the cover off. you may have to wiggle oand pry to get it off but it will come. these are to things that I can think of that will make it sputter. let me know

Me again, did you get to check the fuel pressure. I would do this first.

Car turns over but won't start. battery good, alternator about to be replaced, though alt. has nothing to do with the problem. what next?

it sounds like either your not getting spark, or fuel at the engine. it could be the coil packs/plug wires or the fuel pump/filter its hard to say what to do first. when you get in the car and turn the ignition on to the position just before turning the engine over you should be able to hear the fuel pump kick on in an attempt the prime the fuel system. if you can smell fuel at the engine after cranking for a few seconds its probably getting fuel. if you have access to an ohm meter with a wire clamp you can test each of your plug wires as you crank it to see if your getting spark. each coil pack sends spark through two plug wires. if you cant read a signal from two of the plug wires trace them back to the coil packs and if they go to the same coil pack that coil pack has gone bad. if they go to separate coil packs you may have two coil packs malfunctioning. this is where i would start i hope it helps.

Car turns over but will not start changed the coil and still wont start

There are some possibilities which you will have to check in this case:--

1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.

2) When you crank the car do you see spark coming at the spark plug? If no then its time to check the spark plugs and coil pack. If the spark plugs are not worn out and looks new then its time to check coil pack. The spark plug gets power to spark from coil pack.

3) The other thing to check in this case is the starter solenoid of the car. If the battery is charged and you start the car then it gives power to the starter to start the car. But if starter is faulty or not connected properly then car will not start.

4) The other thing to check in this case is fuel in the car. If there is fuel in the car then check the blockages in the fuel pump if the fuel pump looks proper then check the fuel filter above the fuel pump.

5) If all the above possibilities mentioned above checked out OK/perfect then it's a electrical issue and the wiring's in the car needs to be checked. The car gets power from the battery to get started. so the wires from battery needs to be checked one by one.

The battery to starter connection has power.the battery is ok.but there are many other possibilities related to battery and its other connections, the spark plugs, the fuel pump, the fuel itself, the sensors(o2 sensor, maf sensor)the valve(IAC valve, egr valve). Most probably the spark plug, the coil pack and crank shaft sensor. This 3 are not getting power to get the car start.

1) First of all check the power and voltage to the battery. With meter it will show exact 12 volt if the battery is charged. If the voltage is less get the battery charged at local auto repair shop. If the battery is internally drained and not getting charged then its time to replace the battery.

Car will not roll over in park...starts occassionally then dies within a few seconds, cranks fine...just will not turn over. Purchased new battery, too.

Most probably its a low fuel pressure related problem.Get the fuel pressure checked. If its low then this is faulty fuel pump and clogged fuel filter issue.the other possibilities are,-----

A car that cranks over but doesn't start, in many cases will be due to a bad fuel pump, a broken timing belt, an inoperative cam sensor or crank sensor. Also this problems are related to faulty spark plug. Check the spark at spark plugs when you start the car. Do you notice any spark. Actually you should see. If in case there is no spark then it's a spark plug problem. Also the coil pack gives power to spark plug. So check the voltage at coil pack. It will show 12 volt.If there is no voltage noticed at coil pack then its faulty coil pack that has to be replaced. If all the possible options checked out ok then check the car starter. The starter gets power from battery to start the care. If the starter is faulty then it will not let the car to start. Also check and confirm that there is fuel in the car. If it very low fuel then in some cases this causes the problem. Also check and confirm that fuel pump is functioning properly and the fuel filter is not clogged. One of the easiest ways to check for a fuel pump related problem is to spray a little starting fluid into the air intake while trying to start the car. If the car starts momentarily, then there's a good chance the fuel pump is not working or the car is out of gas. You can also listen for the fuel pump's humming sound when the key is first turned on. Also if a inoperative fuel pump is suspected, a good technician will always check to verify there is power and ground being supplied to the pump, to eliminate the possibility of a bad relay or electrical issue. Fuel pressure can be checked with a pressure gage and if there is pressure, pulse can be checked at the fuel injectors in several ways including the most common, with the use of noid lights. If the injectors don't have pulse the engine won't start. ---------- This troubleshooting tips will help you to solve the problem.Thanks.Helpmech.

ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT IT WONT START

There is no simple answer, there are to many variables. If you have access to a scan tool, pulling the codes should help. Without them its back to old school hunt and peck method. At this point we need to narrow down the problem. You need to test for spark.
  1. Tag and disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs.
  2. Remove the spark plugs and install the spark plug wires to each spark plug.
  3. Ground (do not hold spark plug) the spark plug; check if spark occurs while engine is being cranked.
Crank the engine for no more than 2 seconds at a time to prevent flooding the engine with gasoline.
If you have spark, You will want to make sure you have fuel injector pulse, along with fuel pressure. If you have spark ..simply spray some starting fluid in through the air filter and hold the gas pedal to the floor and crank it over while spraying. If it fires up, you know it is fuel related( fuel pump, regulator, or ECM if no injector pulse) . If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well. This should give you a few things to test and check to start you on your way to narrowing it down. If you have no spark then look at ignition coil connection for power and trace through to the distributor( if equipped ). If it is DIS( no distributor). It may be the Crank sensor or the ECU. The crank shaft sensor has a tendency to fail on these as well.
The ECU uses the signal sent from the Crank sensor to trigger the spark and fuel injectors. ( make certain you have checked all fuses)

Audi 100s 1993 cranks doesn,t start, turns over no start. when it starts runs rough and stalls.

could very well be a faulty sensor, leaky vaccum hose, bad coil packs, needing of new fuel filter, spark plugs, wires.

Have you checked your fuel pressure to make sure it is good. You can do this with fuel pressure tester on the fuel rail.

Also check every cylinder for spark
If you don't have any spark, or very weak spark, you could have bad coil pack, module, or crank sensor.

You can remove one plug at a time, and place it back on plug wire, place it on top of engine block, have someone else turn motor over well you observe to see if there is spark.

Do you have a service or check engine light on? If so, I would have the engine codes read to pinpoint exact problem area.

Let me know if you have any questions or need further help
