Question about 2001 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

My 2001 VR6 Jetta seems to not want to start when I turn the key. I usually have to pump the gas before it will start. Just had the starter replaced but still has check engine light on. I was told might be fuel pump or main relay.

Pumping the throttle pedal will not make it start any easier ,i would suggest trying to change the autochoke temperature sensor so it enriches the fuel when its cold .but even this wouldnt throw the engine light on so again i would ask a local mechanic to have a look for you and read the codes as to why the engine light is on

I need instructions on how to put a new starter 97 jetta GLX

You may want to check some things out before actually replacing the starter.

Check the fuse in the fuse box and the relay.

There are two parts to the starter. One is the actual starter motor and the other in the starter solenoid. The solenoid moves the starter motor into place and engages it into the engine.

When you turn the key you should hear the solenoid click as it moves the starter. If you hear the click and the sound of the stater motor spinning it is just the solenoid. It can be replaced without replacing the starter motor.

If you hear the click and no sound of the starter motor trying to turn. It is the starter motor.

It check for power at the motor. Use a test light or voltage meter to see it is getting power when the key is turned.

If you are getting power you have a problem with the starter motor as you suspect already. The above may save you money.

To change the motor it is fairly simple to do. You remove the four bolts holding the motor in place, remove the electrical connections. Slide the motor out. Installation is the reverse of removal.

I am assuming you know where the starter is. On a diesel it is on the back of the engine. On a gas engine it is on the front side.

If you really want to get into it you can replace the brushes on the starter motor. Once out you open the starter and install new brushes it they appear warn and are not making contact.

If you need details I would go to the library and ask for the Bentley service manual. They will have one or can get one from another branch.

Hope this helps.

What problems does an alternator cause in a 2001 vr6 jetta

if its not fully generating power you will have dim lights and eventually after a while the battery will not charge enough to start the car. not sure of the voltage for a volkswagon but most other cars it generating about 14 on the guage in the car, you can have it tested for free at any decent auto parts place, pep boys, auto zone or advance auto parts to name a few.

2003 Jetta, starts and shuts off after 5-10 sec.

i think you have to have the fuel pump checked. it seems that its not pumping enough gas to the engine so it shuts off after burning the remaining fuel in the line.

Turn ignition key but won't start..All power on, is it starter?

Can be a Junk Relay, access is limited, but giving the Starter a "crack" with a mallet, often cures the problem temporarily. But check the Battery terminals, and Cable to the Starter solenoid ,first for tightness and security.

Starts runs than shuts off after replacing ignition wires and bat

The light with the key through the car is the immobilizer. When you changed the battery it must of screwed it up. You will likely need to tow it to the dealer.
