Check to see if your brake lights are coming on. You need to have a good brake light fuse for the shift interlock to operate.

here are the things to check
brake lights on? no..then check
brake light fuse. ok? then check brake light switch OK? then check
neautral safety switch. OK then check lock solenoid.

try turning the key to the acc position then moving the shifter to neutral. start the car now.'_Intrigue_to_move_or_unlock_when_it's_locked_in_park

1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass stuck in park

I had this problem and after much trial and error found that it was the transmission shift interlock solenoid. It is located under the plastic housing at the base of the shifter. Google P/N# 924-705 (Dorman brand part). You can find it for less than $45.00. Needs no tools to remove this part, only to remove cover to get to it. Both ends of this part have plastic pieces with a 1/2 hole type cup that press right on to a ball end. Good Luck!

I have a 1995 Cutlass and when I push the brake, it won't shift out of park

Sounds like the solinoide on the shifter is not disengaging the lock so the shifter can be shifted out of park. The solinoide has likely gone bad.

1998 Jimmy shifter push button is hard to get pushed in when in the park position. Shifter button pushes in ok in all other applications. How do you correct push button difficulty in not pushing in, in the...

These wear out with time - I would consider putting a towel at the bottom of the shifter - and get a card board back up [ for the over spray] and spray right into the button - spray a lot - way way too much as only a tiny fraction will get past the button. Also push the shifter a little harder forward and then push the button.

Cant get shifter to get out of park

yes it has a electric sensor at the shifter and this part can be purchased from a local dealer. not hard to replace after the plastic is removed from around the shifter. the reason i asked if the key could be removed is that, it also has an electronic release as well and diff. part. hope the info will help you.

Transmission won't shift out of park

If the transmission won't shift out of park, take your center console out around the shift lever, it's kind of annoying with it being in park. Then in front of the shifter you will see a little lockout solinoid unplug it, it will only have two wires on it, then follow it down to a little metal lever push the shift button and push down on the lever at the same time if it comes out of park turn your key on put it back in park while the lockout switch is still unplugged, and with the key on, it should come back out of park. If it works like this then your lockout switch is bad.
