OK, a hard brake pedal is a good thing, in general. But, if the booster is not giving full power due to a vacuum leak, then stopping performance will be diminished due to the lack of vacuum assist.

Make sure the booster is holding vacuum by shutting off the car, locating the booster under the hood at the firewall, between the master cylinder and the firewall.

After a few minutes, remove the check valve from the booster by pulling it out. You should hear a loud swoosh of air going into the booster. If not, the booster may have a leak in it, or the check valve is not working.

Good luck on diagnosing the hard braking problem.

Why is it so hard to apply brake pedal?

_______power brake booster, check vacuum to booster and the check valve for brake booster. primary symtom is high hard pedal that requires greater then normal pedal pressure to stop car. testing booster= pump brakes several times with engine off to deplete stored vacuum. turn on engine with pushing slightly on brake pedal. you should be able to feel the pedal fade away a bit, and then become firm. But not hard. if you feel nothing at the pedal when engine starts. Brake booster is not working. Good-day! make sure vacuum is going to booster with engine running. it may just be a bad vacuum line or check valve.

1996 Buick Park Avenue Ultra making a hissing noise when I press Brake Pedal. Have to Press super hard to stop or slow down.

Sounds like a possible air pocket in the braking system. Do you know how the bleed the brakes? They may need to be bled. Also, if you've added brake fluid recently, and didn't put the cap back on, it could create a suction. Another note is to check the cap to the brake fluid reservoir. It's rare, but, it could be bad.

1993 buick lesabre changed the front rotars and pads and now the cars brake pedal is so hard to push down to get car to stop. Mechanic has checked both the front and back brakes and they are fine. T

I would jack up a front wheel and see if pushing on the pedal with the engine running will stop the wheel from turning.
You need to know if the pressure is reaching the wheels, or if the pads and rotors are too slick to stop the car.
Usually if the pedal is hard, the booster is not working or the brakes are glazed.
Can you stop the car with the parking brake ? That only uses the rear brakes.
You may need a second opinion from a different shop.

2001 silverado hd. i pushed hard on brakes there was a pop like i blew a line but no leaks, pedal went to floor like line blew also. brakes still work but pedal is pushed to the floor to stop. I bled...

Hi oakleafwoodw, sounds as if the brake master cylinder has busted a seal allowing the brake fluid to leak by cylinder when you push the brake pedal giving you no or very little pedal pressure....it is located under the hood on the drivers side firewall, you will see all the brake lines attached to it , remove those and the two bolts holding it on,take it with you to auto parts store for a rebuilt one , they will keep your core for rebuilding, other wise you pay a core charge., verify that they have the one you need before hand, get a quart of dot 4 brake fluid, hook it up, and bleed air from the brake lines starting with wheel cylinders in this order Right rear......left rear.....right front.....left front...making sure to keep fluid level topped off in the master cylinder during the whole bleeding process or you will pump air into lines....OK!! caution: you should not drive it until you have good brakes!! you said they still work but if you had to stop suddenly ,it won't do it.

Break pedal goes to floor with light pedal pressure used during stop and go situations (i.e. in town driving). Hit pedal hard and brakes grab at normal range.

renew the master cylinder immediatly ,the seal between the front and rear chambers has failed. This is a dangerous vehicle and shouldnt be used in this condition it WILL FAIL SOON
