Assuming the engine is in good shape and not in need of a major tune-up, check your carburetor choke. It's not closing when cold. Clean and adjust.
Get a service manual and follow the instructions. Far too complicated to cover here.
Also, make sure you know how to properly SET the choke on a cold start. Slowly push the gas pedal to the floor and let up. Start engine without touching gas. If it's REALLY cold, like 0 degrees, you can hold the pedal halfway down while starting, after setting the choke.
Make sure you have voltage to the + side of the coil and make sure the - side of the coil is hooked to the points in the distributor. Make sure your points are gaped correctly and they are breaking when the engine is cranked over. If you do not have voltage to the + side of the coil look for the ignition resistor, you should have 12 volts going into the resistor and somewhere around 6 volts coming out. The output from the resistor should go to the + side of the coil.
Well you know blow-by is oil blowing past the rings and into the crankcase. If the cylinders were not bored, the new rings may not fix it. The cylinders can be oval shaped or have wider points from top to bottom. You might want to check the PCV system to make sure it is working correctly. The PCV valve pulls fumes from the crankcase into the intake which requires one of the valve covers to be vented to outside air.
It has a set of points and condenser in the distributor that grounds the coil. Have you checked the points to see if they are burnt or out of adjustment ? Is the distributor turning when you crank the engine ?
I don,t know the exact settings but I would set timing by starting about 5 degrees and advancing to wher engine cranks good when warmed up and does not spark knock under load. The points should be fine at .017 or a little more if it doesn't idle smoothly.
make sure your putting the window in from the outside in , they align much easier that direction, just leave the bottom of each rail unbolted, and when the window is in, slide the sides together at the bottom to fit the glass
1969 ,points and distributor ,,,, then unleaded petrol 95 i would set it to 6º at idle ,now as this vehicle was designed to run on leaded fuel with a higher compression than that used on modern cars you could use a lead substitute and set timing to 10º on idle ,now iam not sure if this vehicle had stellite coated valve seats and valves and only a dealer might know ,now if it hasnt got stellite valves and seats then you must use the lead substitute or the valves will burn out ,but if the negine does have stellite valves and seats then it will run quite happily on the unleaded fuel with the timing retarded a bit ,i mean i bet its a 4 litre or something so a slight loss of power will not be noticeable ,but a 998cc morris minor its quite a difference
