Question about 1986 Ford Thunderbird

1 Answer

I have a 1986 Ford T-Bird that every now and then the engine would just stop. I try starting every 2-3 minutes or I wait 20 minutes and it will start right up. Is there a relay that needs to be replaced?

I would check the ignition control module, the distributor pick up coil and the engine computer control relay.

1986 Thunderbird Starting problem, Turn key starts, let go of key stops

Replace the ignition tumbler--i.e. get a new ignition set with new key. This will require removing the plastic trim around the steering column and removing the old ignition set. It's a good DIY project, but you should get a Haynes manual for 83-88 T-Bird/Cougar. Try going to a junk yard for the replacement part. Crown Vics, Cougars, Grand Marquis', Lincolns all have the same type of set for those years.
