You don`t have to remove the intake completely.Just get it up high enough on the passengers side for the starter to clear.I just prop it up with a stick or screw driver and disconnect the starter and remove it.There is plenty of room.I`ve done a few of these at the dealership and never had any problems.Let me know if I can help any more or if you have any more questions.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Where is the starter located on a 03 325i BMW?

Tucked snugley beneath the intake manifold on the driver side (US) of the engine. I have not yet replaced one on an e46. Bosch starters on small engines generally last a couple hundred thousand miles.
Based on the way it looks and my experience with the previous generation of 3-series BMWs, replacing it will be a real PITA. If you pay a dealer to do it, be ready for a bill on the order of $1000. If you pay an independent shop, I would guess you will pay around $700. If you do it yourself, be ready to remove and replace your intake manifold, which is no small task on an e46.
The starter itself is about $250 new or $150 remanufactured.

On Lexus ls 400 the starter is located underneath the manifold of intake. The intake manifold has to be removed to replace the starter. The intake manifold located on the top, left side of the engine from the front, along with the hoses, wires and tubes connected to the manifold.Mark each connections before disconnecting. This will help you while reconnecting. The starter is fitted by bolts.Remove the bolts and detach electrical cables on starter.Remove starter from engine compartment. Then re-fit the new starter in reverse as you removed the old starter. Its not very easy job.You will require proper tools to do this. This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

  • Place the rear of the intake manifold into the plenum duct.
  • Place the front of the intake manifold downward on to the cylinder heads.
  • Install the intake manifold bolts and torque to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) in the sequence illustrated. DO NOT torque the intake manifold bolts when the engine is HOT or at operating temperature.
  • Make sure the plenum duct is fully attached to the rear of the intake manifold and tighten the plenum duct clamp to 20 inch lbs. (2.25 Nm).

Water pump replacement and starter replacement

Water pump replacement requires a special socket. It is ran off a small belt on the end of the from head. Remove the cover and unscrew the pump from the housing. As for the starter, remove the intake manifold, it is under the intake.
