Brake shoe retaining clips. you have to by a brake hardware kit for your make and model to get those clips. you can get them at a auto parts store. I would call ahead to see that the have them in stock

Advice: Check the old brake shoes for uneven wear. Uneven wear from one side of the shoe to the other is an indication of loose or worn brake hardware. Uneven wear from the top of the shoe to the bottom is indication that the shoe is not contacting the drum correctly, usually due to a drum that is beyond wear specifications. Recommendations: Brake hardwareOperation: The brake drum provides the rotating friction surface for the brake shoes to interact with in stopping the vehicle. Advice: Check the friction surface for uneven wear, grooves or small stress cracks caused by excess heat. Uneven wear is an indication of lose or worn brake hardware. Grooves in the friction surface are an indication of brake shoes that have worn down to the metal rivets or brake shoe framework, or of debris lodged between the brake shoe and drum, possibly broken brake hardware. As long as the damage is not too severe, uneven wear can be corrected by resurfacing the drum. Check to make sure that the drum is within specifications before and after the resurfacing. A drum with heat stress cracks should be replaced. If a wheel cylinder is allowed to leak brake fluid onto the new shoes, it will ruin the new shoes causing the brakes to grab and emit a growling or rumbling noise when applied. How do I get the rear spindle off so I can replace the emergency brake shoes on my 2006 chrysler pacifica?



Adjustment

  1. Place parking brake lever in -full released- position.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Remove plug in parking brake shoe support to access adjuster star-wheel.
  4. Through the access hole, rotate the adjuster star wheel in the following direction to expand the shoes outward against the drum:
    1. Left brake - Rotate star-wheel toward rear of vehicle.
    2. Right brake - Rotate star-wheel toward front of vehicle.
  5. Using an appropriate tool, turn adjuster star wheel until wheel will not rotate (dead lock).
  6. Back off adjuster six detents (teeth).
  7. Rotate wheel, checking for light drag. If drag is too heavy, continue to back off adjuster one detent at a time until light drag is present. Do not back off star-wheel more than 17 detents from wheel lock.
  8. Install access plug.
  9. Adjust opposite wheel parking brake shoes using same method.
  10. Lower vehicle.
  11. Apply and release parking brake lever once to ensure proper operation of parking brakes.


Removal & Installation NOTE The following procedure may be used to remove shoes on either side of the vehicle.

  1. Lock out automatic adjuster in parking brake lever.
  2. Raise and support vehicle.
  3. Access and remove rear hub and bearing.
  4. Remove parking brake cable bolt at knuckle.
  5. Completely back off parking brake shoe adjustment.
  6. Remove parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  7. Remove shoe adjuster.
  8. Remove upper brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.
  9. Remove lower brake shoe hold-down clip and pin.
  10. Remove upper and lower shoes with return spring from shoe actuator.
  11. Remove return spring from shoes.

To install:
  1. Install return spring between upper and lower shoes.
    NOTE Before installing shoes on actuator, make sure actuator hooked to rear cable is positioned with word -UP- facing outward.
  2. Install upper and lower shoes with return spring on shoe actuator located on parking brake cable.
  3. Install lower brake shoe hold-down pin through rear of support and lower shoe, then install hold-down clip.
  4. Install upper brake shoe hold-down pin through rear of support and upper shoe, then install hold-down clip.
  5. Install shoe adjuster. Place end of adjuster with star wheel upward.
  6. Install parking brake shoe adjuster spring.
  7. Install bolt securing parking brake cable to knuckle and tighten bolt to 21 ft. lbs. (28 Nm).
  8. Using Brake Shoe Gauge, Special Tool C-3919, or equivalent, measure inside diameter of parking brake drum portion of rotor.
  9. Place Gauge over parking brake shoes at widest point.
  10. Using adjuster star wheel, adjust parking brake shoes until linings on both park brake shoes just touch jaws on gauge. This will give a good preliminary adjustment of parking brake shoes, before a final adjustment is made at end of this procedure.
  11. Install hub and bearing with wheel speed sensor as well as all components necessary to access it.
  12. Lower vehicle.
  13. Unlock automatic adjuster in parking brake lever.
  14. Perform final adjustment of parking brake shoes

  15. Adjustment This vehicle is equipped with permanently sealed rear wheel bearings. There is no periodic lubrication or maintenance recommended for these units.


    Removal & Installation

    1. Raise and support vehicle.
    2. Remove wheel mounting nuts, then tire and wheel assembly.
    3. If equipped with AWD:
      1. Remove cotter pin, nut lock and spring washer from half shaft.
      2. While a helper applies brakes to keep hub from turning, remove hub nut and washer.
    4. Remove brake caliper and rotor from hub and bearing assembly.

    5. Disconnect vehicle wiring harness connector at wheel speed sensor connector.
    6. Unclip wheel speed sensor connector from spare tire mounting support.
    7. Disconnect two sensor cable routing clips on rear suspension crossmember.
    8. Disconnect two sensor cable routing clips along toe link.
    9. Disconnect sensor cable from bracket on brake support.

    10. Completely loosen, but do not remove four bolts fastening hub and bearing in place. Once loosened from threads in hub and bearing, push bolts up against rear of hub and bearing to keep brake support plate in place when hub and bearing is removed.

    11. Pull hub and bearing off knuckle and half shaft (if equipped with AWD), then thread wheel speed sensor cable through hole in brake support plate as it is removed with hub and bearing.

    To install:
    1. Position hub and bearing bolts though rear of knuckle and parking brake support just enough to hold support in place as hub and bearing is installed.
    2. Install hub and bearing by first feeding end of wheel speed sensor cable through hole in bottom of parking brake support. As this is being done, if equipped with AWD, slide hub and bearing onto half shaft. Place hub and bearing through brake support, onto knuckle, lining up mounting bolt holes with bolts and placing wheel speed sensor head at bottom.
    3. Install four bolts fastening hub and bearing in place. Tighten mounting bolts to 60 ft. lbs. (81 Nm).
    4. Place wheel speed sensor cable routing grommet into bracket on parking brake support.
    5. Route wheel speed sensor cable along toe link and rear suspension crossmember connecting routing clips where shown.
    1. Connect vehicle wiring harness to wheel speed sensor connector.
    2. Install brake rotor and caliper.
    3. If equipped with AWD:
      1. Install washer and hub nut on end of half shaft.
      2. While a helper applies brakes to keep hub from turning, tighten hub nut to 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm).
      3. Install spring washer, nut lock and cotter pin on end of half shaft.
    4. Install tire and wheel assembly. Install and tighten wheel mounting nuts to 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).

Brake Drums & Brake Shoes Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Raise and safely support rear of vehicle.
  2. Release parking brake.
  3. Remove rear wheel assemblies. NOTE: If brake drum is stuck, install two 8 mm bolts into threaded holes and tighten evenly.
  4. Remove top return spring, front and rear shoe spring clips and hold-down pins.
  5. Remove anti-rattle spring and adjuster spring. NOTE: Note position of operating lever prior to removal.
  6. Remove bottom return spring.
  7. Remove clip and washer and detach parking brake cable from rear shoe.
  8. Remove brake shoes.
To Install:
  1. Lubricate all brake shoe contact points with appropriate grease.
  2. Place operating level into position on hub.
  3. Install rear brake shoe and connect parking brake cable to rear shoe with washer and clip.
  4. Install front brake shoe and install bottom return spring.
  5. Install hold-down pins and spring clips.
  6. Position operating lever and install top return spring.
  7. Install anti-rattle spring and adjuster spring.
  8. Install brake drum and screws.
  9. Adjust brakes and install rear wheel assemblies.

How do i change the back brakes on my 2005 Chevrolet Silverado


Set blocks around front tires for one. Jack up the rear and set axel on stands.
Pull tire as normal. There will be "star" washers on two of the lug bolts. Gently pry these up and set aside. You'll have to release the pressure on the slave cylinders within the drum. For this I get some 1/4" clear rubber tubing and press one end over the zirc/bleeder fitting. Then loop it up and back down into a clear bottle. Gently crack open the bleeder. Some fluid should come out a start to rise up the tube. Now Gently tap the backside of the drum towards you with a hammer. Just enough to unseat it a bit so that you can wiggle it some what. Once you can wiggle it press the drum forward and back. This helps presses the shoes back against the slave cylinder, thus compressing the piston in the slave cylinder. You should notice the fluid flowing up the tube and the drum getting a bit looser. When the shoes have been pressed in enough, the drum should easily rock off the lugs and come off in your hands. Press the shoes together a bit more, then retighten the bleeder valve being carefull not to dislodge the tube.

At the tope you will see a spring that ties the adjustment nut to the forward shoe. Using a pair of good pliers or thin nosed vice grips on the forward end of the spring. Pull the spring forward then out and set aside. The adjustment screw can then be lilfted out as well as the stop thats connected to it.. Set those aside. There is now a heavy duty spring clip that holds the two shoes in at the bottom. It's held in place by pressure only. Lift one side of the spring clip off of a shoe then twist out that shoe. The spring clip should be able to rock towards the now vacant shoe and you'll easily be able to remove the other shoe. Be careful to not disturb the rubber boots on the slave cylinder to prevent dust from entering. Now you can either brush out/ blow out the accumulated dust or use some brake cleaner to clean up the intererior of the brake cylinder and drum. Now reverse the process for putting the new shoes in. The spring clip in the bottom may pop out on you, but it only just rests in a saddle. You'll likely have to twist it a bit to start getting the first shoe on, then the same for the second. The adjuster slips in place between the shoes as does the stop. This is all held in place by the last spring. This part tends to be a pain as things want to shift with the tension. Take your time and keep an eye on the slave cylinder as this is the time your likey to slide the plunger out and get fluid every where. Once the spring is set, center the shoes as best you can by pushing them either forward or back. The drum should be fairly easy to slide over the shoes and back in place. If not, crack the bleeder again and press the shoes together to make more room. Once the drum is on , replace the star washers and close the bleeder valve. Carefully remove the hose from the bleeder and continue to the other drum. When you're done, add fluid to the MC to the full level. Start the motor and depress the brake peddal a couple of times. If it goes to the floor more than once you either forgot to close a bleeder or one of the adjusters slipped in a drum and you'll have to pull it apart to reseat it all and clean up the fluid, You'll know which one as you'll see it dripping. If the peddal is firm afer the second pump or so then shut off the motor and remount your tires.

does it have rear disc brakes or drum brakes, if disc brakes should be changed just like the front and you might have an emergency brake shoe inside the rotor that they call a halo shoe, if it is drum brakes take off the adjusting spring and the return spring remove the brake adjuster,the the brake bar then remove the brake shoe hold down spring by holding the pin from the back and pushing and turning the spring to remove from the pin, you might have to remove the the emergency brake bar from one shoe by removing the horseshoe clip from the pin on the shoe if you have problems putting it back together look at the other side that you have not torn down yet.

Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Raise vehicle and remove rear wheels.
2. Remove and discard spring nuts securing drums to wheel studs.
3. Remove brake drums.
NOTE: If drums prove difficult to remove, retract brake shoes. Remove access plug at the rear of backing plate and back off adjuster screw with
brake tool and screwdriver.
4. Remove U-clip and washer securing adjuster cable to parking brake lever.
5. Remove primary and secondary return springs from anchor pin with brake spring pliers.
6. Remove hold-down springs, retainers and pins with standard retaining spring tool.
7. Install spring clamps on wheel cylinders to hold pistons in place.
8. Remove adjuster lever, adjuster screw and spring.
9. Remove adjuster cable and cable guide.
10. Remove brake shoes and parking brake strut.
11. Disconnect cable from parking brake lever and remove lever.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean support plate with brake cleaner.
2. If new drums are being installed, remove protective coating with carburetor cleaner or brake cleaner.
3. Clean and lubricate anchor pin with light coat of Mopar multi-mileage grease.
4. Apply multi-purpose grease to brake shoe contact surfaces of support plate.
5. Lubricate adjuster screw threads and pivot with spray lube.
6. Attach parking brake lever to secondary brake shoe. Use new washer and U-clip to secure lever.
7. Remove wheel cylinder clamps.
8. Attach parking brake cable to lever.
9. Install brake shoes on support plate. Secure shoes with new hold-down springs, pins and retainers.
10. Install parking brake strut and spring.
11. Install guide plate and adjuster cable on anchor pin.
12. Install primary and secondary return springs.
13. Install adjuster cable guide on secondary shoe.
14. Lubricate and assemble adjuster screw.
15. Install adjuster screw, spring and lever and connect to adjuster cable.
16. Adjust shoes to drum.
17. Install wheel/tire assemblies and lower vehicle.
18. Verify firm brake pedal before moving vehicle.

Drum Removal
  1. Remove the rear wheel and the tire assembly. Refer to Section 204-04 .
  1. Retract the brake shoes and loosen the brake adjuster screw.

  1. Remove the brake drum, refer to Drum in this section.
  1. Remove the upper retracting spring.
  1. Remove the lower retracting spring.
  1. Remove the self-adjuster.

  1. Remove the hold-down springs.
  1. Remove the parking brake lever clip and the parking brake lever.
