If it is the wrong tooth, it will grind badly and be destroyed in no time. Sorry I can't tell you what you need, but that is what it will do

check the condition of the teeth on the ring gear of the engine. They can become burred and cause improper engagement of the starter pinion. Check the adjustment of the pinion action.

What are the correct items for a full tune-up for my 1997 nissan maxima gxe?

This model uses direct ignition, which means each cylinder has a coil sitting on top of the spark plug, no distributor.
So - - air filter - fuel filter - spark plugs.
There are things that need to be done at a certain mileage which would be in your owners manual. Such as the serpentine belt, trans fluid change, coolant fluid change, etc.

The car will not start 50% of the time when it wont everything works and the starter silynoid just clicks.

Take the Starter off and take it to an auto parts store (Advance Auto or Autozone) where they will bench test the starter for FREE to find out if it needs to be replaced. This is a free service!
If the Starter is bad, then you can purchase it from that store and have the old starter there already to void the core charge.

Let me know if this helped.

starter has nothing to do with check engine light ,you local man obviously found a cracked rubber vacumn pipe under the inlet manifold and thought he ddone it getting the starter out so he cut the end off and refitted it .The problem with the nissan garage is lack of work so they employ the milk the golden cow attitude iam sorry to say .Just like blood sucking solicitors in divorce cases or ambulance chasing vampires .And yes they are welcome to try to sue me for defamation of carecter ,but they are all the same no matter what country you live in ,they will also diddle you out of compensation by taking a backhander from the insurance company as well .

You need to remove the trans and clean up the bell housing and trans housing. If you got this tranny from a junkyard chances are its been sitting around and has some surface corrosion on it that needs to be cleaned off. If you do this you should be good to go. Good luck.

make sure the cables from the battery to the starter are tight and try replaceing the starter solenoid. Follow the positive cable from the battery and it will go straight to the solenoid. Cheap stuff first.
