Question about 1998 Jeep Cherokee

Instrument cluster has no power, fog lights do not work, dome light does not work, door ajar lights do not work, all these problems happened at the same time, whatever feeds these three circuits is defective

    this is not fuse problem, it seems that power comes through the instrument panel to power the dome light and or fog lights so I wanted to find out where the power wire from the pdc comes from and how it is routed to the instrument cluster

    what you are talking about is the pcd all the fuses and relays in that box are ok, I think I will have to try and trace the power input from the instrument cluster back to the pcd to see where the break in the circuit is, I think it is also possible that the instrument cluster is no good

    just looking for more ideas about this problem.all the fuses are ok and the relays in the pcd are all ok I think the dome light and the fog light relays are powered through the instrument cluster somehow

Hello Kevin. This is a common problem with Cherokee's, the connector at the back of the gauge cluster/panel tends to lose its connection. There is an updated part to fix this available at the parts department of your Jeep dealership. IF you pull your cluster and put some diaelectric grease on the connection and put it back together it will work but getting the modified part installed is a better and more permanent fix. Also, check the ground wire while you are in there as well as this could cause the same thing.
That said, if you are into repairing things yourself, wonderful. IF not, the shop you need is called an autoelectric repair shop. Look in the yellow pages for these. Joe

Under the hood in the engine compartment,there is a box with about 10 primary fuses which would easily cause this.It will knock out many systems which are somewhat similar in location and pirpose.It is called a power distribution center.The fuses are higher rated and different than the ones inside the car.They are a primary power section to prevent multiple fuses from blowing.It is just for that,blowing 1 fuse instead of blowing several.If you replace it and blow another one,it will be quite a process to determine what is causing it since so many systems are involved.Normally,it is a large,perhaps 6" x 10" ,plastic box that just looks out of place.If you have the owner's manual,it will list what each one is for.If not,a dealer or a shop would most likely provide information of some kind for free.I searched many times for many manuals and car manuals are not free anywhere.Good luck,Greg If this doesn't work,or if you need further help if it does work,comment here and I will get an autolink to your post and will reply ASAP.

Interior Lighting The interior lamp system is separated into 2 subsystems: the interior lamp subsystem and the on-demand lamp subsystem. The dome light and front map light on-demand lamps are also part of the interior lamp subsystem.
An on-demand interior lamp will only illuminate when its specific switch is activated. On-demand lamps consist of the front map light and the dome light.
The instrument cluster illuminates the interior lamps when any door is ajar, when an unlock signal is received by the vehicle security module (if equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE) or the dimmer switch is rotated to the ON position. The instrument cluster will turn off the interior lamps when all doors are closed, the vehicle security module (if equipped with RKE) receives a lock signal, 25 seconds have elapsed since the illuminated entry feature was activated, or the dimmer switch is rotated to the OFF position.
The vehicle is also equipped with a battery saver feature. The battery saver feature provides automatic shutoff of the demand lamps, courtesy lamps, and the warning chimes after a specific period of time has elapsed in order to save battery power.

  1. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the cause is not visually evident, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
    • check that the program card is correctly installed.
    • check the connections to the vehicle.
    • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool operating manual.
  1. Carry out the diagnostic tool data link test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:

    Pinpoint Test A: The Interior Lamps Are Inoperative
    Normal Operation On vehicles equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE), the door ajar switches are hardwired to the vehicle security module. The vehicle security module monitors the status of all door ajar switches, and when a door is opened, transmits a dome lamp ON signal to the instrument cluster through UART based protocol (UBP) circuit 1906 (PK), indicating a door has been opened. When the instrument cluster receives the dome lamp ON signal from the vehicle security module, the instrument cluster energizes the interior lamp circuits, which illuminates the interior lamps and, if equipped, the puddle lamps in the exterior mirrors.
    On vehicles without RKE, the door ajar switches are hardwired to the instrument cluster. When the driver or passenger door is opened, the instrument cluster receives a ground signal from the driver door ajar switch through circuit 344 (BK/YE), or from the passenger door ajar switch through circuit 345 (BK/PK), and the instrument cluster energizes the interior lamp circuits, causing the interior lamps to illuminate.
    The dimmer control switch can be used to turn the interior lamps ON or OFF when the doors are closed. The interior lamp defeat switch can be used to turn the interior lamps OFF when the doors are open.

My 2004 Pontiac grand am se1 acts like door is open and interior light stays on also does t lock on its own when in gear and lights don't blink and horn not honk when locking with key bob


Door ajar switch problem more then likely or wiring issue . The BCM - body control module won't turn off interior light , let door lock because it think's the door is open . The door ajar switch is a input to the BCM .

The first thing would be to have it checked for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes . Also check with an enhanced scan tool to see if the BCM shows ajar switch data (open or closed ? Do you know about body electronics ?

What color are the wires that go from door switch to dome lights on a 2005 mustang v6 conv.


The door switch doesn't go to the dome lights , the switch (door ajar switch ) is an input to the SMJ - smart junction box or body control module take your pick .
Principles of Operation
When the SJB detects a request for lighting, it turns on the interior lamps by supplying power to the lamps. The request for lighting can be an open door signal from a door ajar switch, an interior lighting on command from the instrument panel dimmer switch or an unlock command from a remote keyless entry (RKE) transmitter.
The door ajar switches are hard-wired directly to the SJB. The 2 door ajar switches are normally closed when the doors are closed. The decklid ajar switch is normally closed when the decklid is closed. All door ajar switches receive voltage from the SJB and each has its own ground circuit.
The instrument panel dimmer switch receives a ground signal from the SJB. The instrument panel dimmer switch provides variable resistance for backlighting the instrument cluster and a toggle ON/OFF function for the interior lights.
The RKE receiver is contained inside the SJB. When the SJB receives an unlock request from an RKE transmitter, it unlocks the doors and turns on the interior lamps. There could be DTC'S diagnostic trouble codes stored in the SJB ! You can not access these codes with a OBD2 code reader , need a factory scan tool .

This is not a good thing. Ford uses a computer called the GEM and that means General Electronics Module. It controls:

What can i do to get my dome lights to go out in my 03 ford f150


Is the headlight switch the pull out type ? If so, turn it fully counterclockwise. Then turn it clockwise until it clicks. Some other vehicles have a switch on the light itself. Generally it has 3 positions "On", "Off" and "Door". Make sure it is not in the "On" position.

i must say that i feel your pain with this,, my door ajar light does the same thing but my dome light doesn't come on when the doors are open, i have to flick the switch on the dome light to make it come on. In my opion and i stress my opion it saounds like a issue with the body controller, im not sure what ford calls it but it controls all the body functions, i dont think the low coolant light is connected to the body contoller but i dont know this for sure, i think that light is controlled bny the engine ecm. some times a dealer can connect to the body controller and see if there are any fault codes for circuits that it controls and or monitors, also they can reflash or update the configeration and or calibration level cause ford release's fixes for issues all the time, same theory works for any control module on a vehicle. i dont think any of the auto parts stores have the right program to connect to bofy controlers but i could be wrong, worth looking into. i only put up with mine cause i use it as a beater, if you are worried about your dome light staying on and drianing your battery then you could pull out or disconnect the dome lights for the time being, its not a fix but just a band-aid.

Don't think you have a door ajar switch problem , more then like the lighting control module is the culprit . Does the door ajar light on the instrument cluster stay lit ?
The interior lighting can be separated into two distinct modes of operation: the courtesy lighting and the demand lighting. The lighting control module (LCM) controls all of the interior lighting in the vehicle, as described in the following text.
The front dome lamps, rear reading lamps, and instrument panel courtesy lamps, can be illuminated either by opening any of the vehicle doors (courtesy lamp function) or by depressing the headlamp switch (demand lamp function).
When any door is open, the door ajar switch grounds an input to the LCM which then sends power to the courtesy lamps. The voltage sent to the courtesy lamps gradually increases from 0 volts to 12 volts within 500 ms (± 50 ms), to achieve the theater lighting effect. When the door(s) are closed the door ajar switch(es) break(s) the ground to the LCM input which then gradually reduces the power from 12 volts to 0 volts within 5 seconds. (± .5 second).
When the headlamp switch is depressed it grounds an input to the LCM which in turn sends 12 volts to the front dome lamps, rear reading lamps, and instrument panel courtesy lamps. When the headlamp switch is depressed a second time, it breaks the ground to the LCM input which then ceases to send power to the front dome lamps, rear reading lamps, and instrument panel courtesy lamps.

The battery saver will disrupt power to the courtesy lamps after 10 minutes, the demand lamps after 30 minutes, and the headlamps after 10 minutes. Turning the ignition switch to the RUN or ACC position will terminate the battery saver feature by disabling the interrupt timers and reinstate power to the lamps.

  • Are the courtesy lamps still illuminated?
Yes REPAIR circuit 53 (BK/LB). REPEAT the self-test. CLEAR the DTCs.

No INSTALL a new LCM. REFER to Section 419-10 . REPEAT the self-test. CLEAR the DTCs.

Dome light staying on and door ajar is light is off


next to the head light switch there is a roller switch. roll it down one click tell me what happens. sorry if you already tried this. good luck.
