Question about 2002 Jaguar X-Type

1 Answer

My 2003 S-Type Jag with 114,000 and one Cat replaced throws of a P0420 code after getting gas. I changed the gas cap. The light stays on until I get below 1/2 a tank then the light goes off. Today, I was taking the gas cap off, shut the little door, the car locked itself. I opened the car and turned it on and the check engine light was off! Any clues?

For the po420 clean or replace maf sensor. you can go to any auto parts store and buy maf sensor spray. just follow directions on can. Those codes are 99% of the time a faulty cat converter. but first check for vacuum leaks, go to www.engine-light-help.com/oxygen-sensor-codes.html-- this site should give more info than i can. have a good day!!

Those cars are notorious for engine problems unfortunately. The exhaust valves tend to warp from heat after around 200k miles. Therefore throwing the O2 codes. Best outcome and cost effective thing I can recommend is replacing the engine with a new or low mileage engine.

p0420

no FSM> and not looking up P0420?
no engine stated, so ill get it wrong too..?????????????
420 is cat monitor failure. "efficiency"
the most hard of all.

ill make a list from hard and expensive .
1: bad sensor 2 rear. you failed to do both, that was WRONG.
2: bad cat. (i can weld on any cat for $99 bucks.) i do it last.. dead last.
3: engine running real bad. BUY a scan tool, now.

so the o2 is new that leaves #2 or #3.
i never shot gun cats. but shops do, its not their cash, huh?

i connect a real scan tool (not one that misses factory DTC codes)
then look at pendings for P042o , see funny sensor readings there, bingo.
i check every PID. for all sensors to be sure they READ right.
ECT AT 180F+ AND HOLDING? HOT.>?,
is the engine holding closed loop status at idle, no fix that NOW.
is LTFT (long term fuel trim ) near 0 or at - 40 or + 40% (fix that next)
if trim is good, the engine.
If the front 02 is new, the AFR will be correct and the the front 02 will swing fast and the trim will be near 0 , -4 is near best.
tad rich , natural.
once the engine is running Stoich at light flat cruise. (close loop) the
cat will heal its self (bake dry) and stop throwing 420. ( a hope deal)
if not the cat is bad.

ive cured some of the most hard 420s,.

on some ratty engines, a new cat can in fact hide it , until it cooks to death and next year 420 are back.
id never do that because gas is expensive. fix engine first.

2003 chevy trailblazer code p0420

Is your engine temperature at 210 degrees? Need a scan tool for this, the guage isn't reliable. If not, cheapest thing to do 1st would be change your thermostat if it's not at 210. If that doesn't work, have your catylitic converter back pressure tested. You could try some Cat Clean added to your gas too as cats are expensive.

2003 impala. Hard starts and fumes smell.

this is what i found for you

The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensorwaveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensoricon1.png reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

Most likely, the aftermarket cat they installed is a high flow cat. This commonly causes issues with throwing that code on our cars. You can either have an OE cat installed, or just have the code deleted from the PCM by someone that has a tuner.
Good Luck

Engine code p0420

The P0420 code is set when the oxygen sensor after the catalytic converter gives a reading the same or very close to the reading of the oxygen sensor(s) before the catalytic converter.

There are usually three possible causes...
The front oxygen sensor (before the cat) is giving an incorrect reading.
The rear oxygen sensor (after the cat) is giving an incorrect reading.
The catalytic converter is not working properly.

Since you recently replaced the cat, the logic points to the sensors, but it could be the cat again. Aftermarket converters are usually smaller than OEM and don't last as long.

Our Subaru encountered this issue several years ago under warranty. The first time the dealer replaced the front oxygen sensor. This was the cheapest repair and since it was an intermittent problem I am sure they hoped to delay the issue until the warranty was up. The second time they replaced the catalytic converter and we haven't had any more issues.

The vehicle will run fine for a while until that cat goes out all the way, the only thing that might get you away cheaper than $1,000 is a wrecking yard cat, but then you still take risks. If the cat is bad its bad nothing to do but replace it.

2003 toyota camry

P0420 is a cat code. Sometimes, you can replace the upstream & downstream air/fuel & O2 sensors, run some good fuel injection cleaner thru it, and that might fix the problem. If not, you may need to replace the cat. Note that the cat is covered under warranty for 8 yrs/80,000 miles. Toyota will replace it if it has gone bad, for free.
