Question about 2008 Chevrolet Equinox
This is fairly common problem. It will need a new ignition lock cylinder most likley. I would contact dealer and see if they can help with some assistance from gm. The new cylinder has to be keyed and all so will need to go to dealer or locksmith

It sounds like a dead battery or battery connections. The keys won't come out, because there is a positive feed wire to the lock cylinder that will not allow it to turn the lock position when there is no power.

SOURCE: how to use the remote
If it is factory installed remote start lock the doors with the fab as you would to set the alarm then hold the start button at the top of the fab it should start. Please note that if the vehicle has a check engine light on the remote start function will be disabled and will not work.
