Tail lights stay on with ignition off

The brakelight switch is located somewhere on your brake pedal arm. On many cars, there is a small rubber piece that the brakelight switch makes contact with. If that piece of rubber falls off the tail lights will stay on all the time. Look around in your floorboard for pieces of rubber or plastic. You can find another piece of rubber and glue it on if this happens. Or if the one that fell off is intact just glue it back on with superglue.

Or the brakelight switch could be stuck.

My 95 toyota camry brake light stays on

Ive got a 92 Tercel. Had this same problem. Look around on the floorboard of your car. Look for a small rubber disc, or broken up pieces of the rubber disc.

If you see the pieces or whole hard rubber thing on the floor, then the rubber disc that goes at the point where the brakelight switch touches the back of the brake pedal has fallen off.

When that disc falls off the brakelight switch touches bare metal, and the switch is grounded which makes it stay on all the time.

Climb under the dash with a flashlight and look at the back of the brake pedal. Find the brakelight switch, look at the point where the switch contacts the pedal. See if the rubber disc is missing. If it
is missing find a small piece of rubber to superglue on the spot where the switch makes contact.

If the disc is there the brakelight switch is probably stuck. If its stuck you will see a gap between
the switch contact and the brake pedal. If its stuck get a replacement brakelight switch from an
auto parts store.

The brakelight switch is a known issue on VW's. There was a recall on most cars. Call the stealership with the VIN # and they can see if it applies to you.

Erratic speedometer with ABS and brakelight lit

same problem here, found 3 places that say it is the abs sensor:

Had this problem with my 1999 Ram 1500. There is a sensor at the top of the rear differential for the ABS system. That sensor went bad and replacing it took care of the problem. What caused mine to go bad was apperantly water got into the differential when launching and loading my boat. check to see if gear lube needs to be replaced also.
The answer above is perfectly correct. When the ABS sensor on the diff goes bad the speedo no longer will work, the odometer stops recording mileage and both brake and ABS light comes on. You also loose O/D or "Lock-up" in the torque converter. The sensor is inexpensive and can be changed in about 30 mins. Good Luck!

The fix for your truck is the ABS speed sensor located in the top of the differential housing , held in with one stud . Your speedometer is calculated through the ABS controller. Replacing that sensor will fix your problem.
